Kesho's the boy!

I would contact Twycross direct suggesting this(as I've queried things in the past with them) but I think they wouldn't answer me anymore (!!) OR they'd quote the official line that 'such decisions are made by the EEP studbook keepers etc etc' (I've had a few of those before)

Lets hope that perhaps this match is already being considered.....

Dublin recently sent Orangutan 'Jorong' to Dudley so there's some sort of precedent there for them to do similar with a Gorilla. It would also be far better than joining a batchelor group which after all is really a 2nd choice for those males which can't join females.

There is one possible obstacle to this scenario though- if Dublin's silverback Harry still doesn't like(or mate) the younger female Mayani, in that case Dublin would want to keep 'Kesho' as long as they can, -for obvious reasons...

Can somebody help with details of the Dublin orangs , current and recent . I have not been able to find any threads .

ISIS says they have 0.4 . I know Jurong moved to Dudley and that he sired a baby with Maggie , I assume a daughter .

On an IZES trip over 10 years ago we were introduced to an impressive adult male . I think he has long gone and that there have been quite a few changes in recent years .

With possible pregnancies at Chester and Paignton , Amy due at Monkeyworld , Jurong's move to Dudley , it would be great to see an orang baby boom .

I know about Gorilla Haven's unofficial gorilla stud-book . Is there anything similar for orangs out there ?

The large adult male you saw at Dublin would have been Tick/Sibu( not the same animal as 'Sibu' at Chester) He was born at Los Angeles, later sent to Rotterdam and arrived in Dublin in 1984. He fathered two young at Dublin with female Leonie (Riona 1996 & Karl 1997). In 2001 he was sent to Oewehand's Zoo at Rhenen.

The 0.4. females would be Maggie & Leonie (full sisters; born at Rotterdam)
Riona (born Dublin 1996- Tick x Leonie) + another younger female born Dublin ? (Jorong x Maggie?) I can't remember what happened to Leonie's son 'Karl' but he may have met an accidental death(Drowning?)

'Jorong' went to Dublin from Chester along with his mother 'Lola' who later died at Dublin. His father was (London/Chester) Anak and he's not related to the other Dublin animals (except his offspring). I presume he'll return to Dublin if they want to breed again.

Previous Orangutans at Dublin in the 1960/70's period were Adam(adult male) Eve and Tommy(both these died quite young) and much later 'Jill' from Bristol who was sent as a mate for 'Adam' after her mate 'Jack' died at Bristol. Adam & Jill died within a short time of each other.

I haven't yet come across any Orangutan studbook along the lines of 'Gorillas Galore' on the internet.
 
Thanks Pertinax . Good to hear that Tick did not die at Dublin . I vaguely remember something about an orang drowning - a real shame - they have also had at least one chimp loss by drowning I think .

In that case I'm pretty sure it was the Dublin-bred 'Karl'

They did have a chimp drowning too- a mother that leapt in to save her child that fell in. I really don't trust Apes and water, even in these days of better designed moats accidents still seem to happen.
 
Thanks Monkeyworld . I think I have now identified ,at least by name , every orang currently in the UK and Ireland .
 
Does Dublin Zoo still have Matt their male African lion? I know he is quite aged at 25 years old!

Are lions still going to be part of their masterplan for the next few years, or are the current pair the final lions to be at the zoo?

matt the lion died two months ago,he had cancer and was quiet a good age,

karl is in barcelona zoo he was moved there afew years back,dublin zoo has never lost an orang to drowning,you ar right about the chimp though.
 
This Matt the lion seems quite the sight, was he a large Lion? Or/and have anyone of you guys have a good picture of him?
 
After i visited Belfast zoo with a friend we went to dublin. I must say that although the collection in belfast is "better", i liked dulbin zoo better. Especially the old buildings on the top.

I liked the savanna the least. Great enclosures for the animals, but to me kinda boring. The field for the giraffes is enormous and because you can't walk around it there is the chance you can only the the animals from great distance (i always hate that in burgers/arnhem as well). It might have been nice if they had put the rhinos in there as well, there is plenty of space.
In the giraffehouse there was a newborn walking around between some keepers. All the adult giraffes were outside so i assume it was being handreared.

The elefantenclosure on the other hand looks superb. Beautiful riverbed, nice house etc. Also fun for me to see the 3 ex-rotterdam animals, as that is my "home-zoo".

But the most wonderful thing i saw in the zoo was in the childrens zoo. They had a theatre were kids could see how cows are milked! A great idea to teach citykids about countrylife.
