Edinburgh Zoo History of polar bears at Edinburgh

I think Hercules has been discussed in detail in a previous thread.

I seem to remember that one of the Edinburgh annual reports mentions Hercules being quarantined after arrival from the States.

In the previous thread we established that Hercules had gone to the USA to have tooth and claw operations.

Just had another look at the 1984 annual report - it was definitely the same Hercules as Andy Robin is mentioned. He must have been serving quarantine after returning from the US.

One of the bears (Hayley) at Dartmoor was born at HWP. Also, I have a report of the last few polar bear cubs born at Edinburgh if anyone is interested.

Please do, would be good to know what has happened with the last few polar cubs.

Ohoto
Male born 1991 at Edinburgh (Barney x Mercedes)
Transferred to Japan 1993

Resurrecting this one a bit - Ohoto was a female, and she gave birth to cub in October 2009 which was hand reared:

You can see a pic of Mercedes and one of her cubs along with Ohoto about half way down this thread:

Die K-Files. Knuts Aussenposten im Indischen Ozean: 15.November - Happy Birthday Surprises....

Can't say I agree with how the Japanese seem to be exhibiting the cub, but how cool would it be if that cub could be Walkers' future mate at the HWP?

Hercules was quarantined at Edinburgh Zoo in 1984/85 - i.e. he was not born at Highland (there was no mention of him being a Grizzly in the annual report).

The following Polar Bears have lived at Edinburgh during my lifetime:

Jim
Male born early 1940s
Died 1976

Queenie
Female born 1952
Died 1975

Nanuk and Anouska
Females born 1976 in Canada
Arrived at Edinburgh 1976 (via Toronto Zoo)
Both died December 1982 from unknown causes

Barney
Male born 29.11.1976 at Whipsnade (Amos x Mosa).
Arrived at Edinburgh 10.11.1977
Died 1996

Mercedes
Female born 1979/80 in Canada
Arrived at Edinburgh 1984
Transferred to Highland WP 2009

To-nuik/Minty
Male born November 1988 at Edinburgh (Barney x Mercedes)
Transferred to Antwerp March 1990

Ohoto
Male born 1991 at Edinburgh (Barney x Mercedes)
Transferred to Japan 1993

The two Brown Bears who fell out at Highland were two females named Mary and Molly - Molly was transferred down in Edinburgh in 1993 - she left in 1995 (to Camperdown?) and Mary died in 2000 aged 33.

A very interesting list, one of Barney and Mercedes cubs was given the nick-name "Wee-Sweetie" when born can anyone tell me which one this would have been please??
