Calgary Zoo Calgary Zoo news 2012-2013

Intersting. I really dont know anything about Calgary Zoos animals. I had just read the artical and thought others on here who live around Calgary would like to know they had a new hippo to see. I looked on their website and they didnt mention they were to be mates but they also didn't mention he was her grandson or that he had visited before if that is the case. Funny to ignore that if people might have a previous attachement to him. Now I dont know anything about hippo reproduction but is Sparky too old to reproduce? If they are related wouldnt that be a concern? Or do they have hippo birth control?

Sparkey was Toronto's most recent hippo birth in 1987 (I think)

Gee Im starting to feel bad I keep finding bad news to deliver for Calgary fans but I have more of it for you. The Asian Elephant calf expected next winter didnt make it. Rani delivered the stillborn male this morning and he had already been dead for quiet some time before delivery. The news release makes it sound like the time table to move the herd will be sped up now without a calf to be concerned with. I hope next time I post for you people it will be something good. Sorry.

Calgary Zoo sets attendance record - Calgary - CBC News

Calgary Zoo had close to 1.5 million visitors in 2012, an astonishing number because it beat its all-time record that was set in 1988 when the zoo had a temporary exhibit with Giant Pandas. In 2012 the brand-new Penguin Plunge exhibit brought in enormous crowds and people lined up for hours just to see the black-and-white birds. Also, the city of Calgary has 1.2 million residents and it is an extremely rare occurrence in North America for a zoo to have more visitors than the metropolitan base surrounding it.

Good news first the whole lion pride is out together.

Sad news now from Penguin Plunge.

Fiona a gentoo peguin died after swallowing a stick.

Calgary Zoo says penguin died in freak accident - Calgary - CBC News

Asa the emperor peguin just died due to a respitory infection. Too bad since she was the only penguin to produce an egg last year.

Apparently there is a leaked memo that suggests Calgary might become home to a walk through lemur exhibit if and when money becomes available around 2014. Hope this happens for Calgary. A walkthrough exhibit would be really cool.

That would be wonderful for this blossoming facility, as with the opening of the excellent Penguin Plunge and 1.5 million visitors in a city that has 1.2 million residents Calgary Zoo is moving up in the world. I would point out that technically the zoo already has a walk-through lemur exhibit, as I saw Mongoose Lemurs in the TransAlta Rainforest pavilion and one of the roaming critters was only a few feet above my head when I visited the zoo 3 times in August of 2012.

Also, it has been almost a year since the initial announcement that the zoo would be sending its Asian Elephants away for welfare reasons but there has still not been a destination decided upon.

Calgary Zoo - Please reconsider the relocation of elephants - INVEST IN THEIR FUTURE

I would like to direct you to a facebook page (Calgary Elephants) and petition (thepetitionsite.com) which has been created by concerned Calgarians who are trying to persuade the zoo to consider other options. The zoo leases a 320 acre parcel of land south of the city which would be a wonderful possibility and would create one of the largest elephant environments in the world. Please consider supporting this concept, and if you feel appropriate - spread the word. Your voice should matter.

Please sign the petition and share the site!

I wonder where they will go so i have layed some of the 9 possible options ( as said on another article):

Likely options:
- National zoo ( just opened and can hold 10 elephants but has a small herd)
- Los Angeles Zoo ( breeding age bull with lots of room for an expanded herd)
- Oklahoma City zoo ( exhbit only has 4 elephants but can hold 8 and has breeding bull)
- national elephant center ( recently opened with no elephants yet)
Other unlikely options:
- Denver zoo ( wants bull only herd but holds females too)
- San Diego zoo ( herd is elderly and slowly dieing off)

- any others that I may have missed?

I dont know about the National Zoo since their male, 12 year old, Kandula is Maharani's nephew threw her brother Calvin. While they can keep them seperated they would also need to bring in an additional bull for breeding. Though maybe Spike will stay with them in that case because he is not related to the National Zoo's breeding age female Shanthi, Kandula's mother. But they could be looking to ship Kandula out.

The first phase of the national elephant center is designated for African elephants only.

Columbus and Houston can both be added to the list, and depending on how long the zoo is willing to wait, Portland could become an option as well.

Denver is bringing in three young males from Europe later this year... So there would not be room for Three more females.

Fort Worth and Dickerson Park come to mind as other facilities seeking more female Asian elephants.

I would say that houston has too little room for 3 more female elephants and that fort worths exhibit is way to small to hold more elephants. Here are the most logical choices in my mind: Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, National Zoo, and Columbus zoo.
