San Diego Zoo Zoo News 2013

The one born in July to Nariah? It doesn't appear as though she's been named yet. I would think they would've given her one by now, but maybe it'll be announced at the opening of the new exhibit

Gao Gao might father a cub this year even if Bai Yun is busy raising Xiao Liwu. His semen was used during AI on Mei Xiang in Washington, in combination with Tian Tians. If a cub arrives this summer or fall they will have to do a DNA test on the baby before naming the father.

The female African wild dog passed away and they sent the male to the Phoenix Zoo to be part of a breeding pair. The elderly lioness, Tango, also passed away last month. There is a pregnant Okapi due in June.

Does this mean the lion grotto in the area formerly known as Bear Canyon is now empty?

There are hyenas (pretty sure spotted) in there now. As of yesterday the exhibit by the moving sidewalk (up to Elephant Odyssey) was empty.

That's too bad about Tango and the female wild dog. I'm confused, though, as to why they sent a male African wild dog to a zoo that already has FOUR males. In order for him to be part of a breeding pair they'd have to bring in a female and I think it would make more sense to send a female to San Diego rather than send the male to a zoo that already has 4 males. Oh well.

does anyone know the name of the baby koala? Thanks in advance!
From an e-mail I received from the zoo. "Our newest bundle from Down Under is now peeking out of Nariah’s pouch, and it’s time this little koala cutie has a name! Starting April 26 and running through May 10, you can vote for your favorite marsupial moniker among the four final choices: Kirra (which means “leaf” in an Aboriginal dialect), Bri (“acacia”), Arika (“bluewater lily”), and Tallara (“rain”). In the meantime, check out the live Koala Cam to see if you can spot the joey and decide which name you think fits best!"

I *think* I finally saw Nariah's joey on the cam the other day, but I couldn't be 100% sure because of the camera angle and it was moved. I didn't see the list of names up for deciding so thank you, Betsy, for that.

There are new inhabitants in the glass enclosure next to the orangutans. Joe and Lucy the elderly Columbian Brown spider monkeys have moved from their exhibit in the Children's zoo. Half of the Children's zoo has been closed in order to build the second 4D theater. They will only be there for the summer then they will be off exhibit permanently. I was told the Silver-leaf Langurs will then be moved in.

Wait, a second 4D theater? Replacing half of the Children's Zoo? Sigh...

If the Silver leaf langurs are moving to the exhibits next to the orangs, what's going by the Sun Bears then? Haven't they moved the sloth bears into the sun bear forest exhibit too? Is San Diego actually doing stuff that makes sense in zoogeography??

I actually don't know where the Silver leaf langurs are. There are a couple of Francois' langurs in the exhibit next to the where the sun bears used to be. Yes, the sun bears are where the sloth bears used to be and visa versa. With all the construction, present and future, animals are being moved frequently. It is hard to keep track of them all but I try!

I wonder what species will go in the Amur Leopard exhibit that was recently opened in Africa Rocks (2011?). Will leopards continue to be located there?

It would be much more appropriate for caracals or servals, both by theme and by size

A few years ago they stated that entire canyon would be redone (by 2016 if I remember correctly, though of course that may be pushed back by now). I would assume this is a first step towards that goal.
