River Wonders River Safari details revealed

The access to the panda exhibit from the Zoo passes by the Mekong River exhibits. Here's a sneak peek at the exhibit for the giant catfish, stingray and Siamese carp from monsterfishkeepers forum:

This is the 2nd largest tank at River Safari, the largest being the Amazon Flooded Forest tank for manatees and arapaima.

Surprise, surprise, the opening has been delayed again, from end-February till likely mid-March (leading one local magazine to label it "The place [that] keeps threatening to open, but never does"). Apparently the boat ride section is facing technical difficulties.

Well, I think Mr Cham must have one of most ZooChatter's dream jobs: Director of Exhibit Design (at WRS no less). He must have so much fun! :D
 
More news about animals moving into River Safari, this time the manatees, but still no opening date. WRS still states on its website that the park will open in the 1st quarter of 2013.

All 11 of the Zoo's manatees will move into the Amazon Flooded Forest exhibit, which the park claims as the world's largest freshwater aquarium tank at 2 million litres. The park's oldest manatee, a 21-year old female originally from Nuremberg, weighs a whopping 1.1 tons.

the tank doesn't look quite as good as the artist's impression we have earlier seen. Is it viewable from above the water's surface as well (as the photo seems to imply)?
 
@Chlidonias: Yeah, I think it looks too sparse for a flooded forest and I don't like the smooth bottom (I'd prefer some kind of substrate). Maybe vines and smaller branches would snag the manatees. Wouldn't be fun to untangle a 1 ton manatee underwater...

If I remember the building layout correctly, the entrance to the exhibit is somewhere near the hut at the top right of the photo. This could be the first vantage point of the aquarium, above water. The descending path then winds round the back of the tank to the first underwater viewing window, a curved one, that can be seen left centre of the photo. The path then continues to the main gallery with a 22 metre long window, which is on the side from where the photo was taken. The photographer is standing at the service area above the main gallery.
 
well it shall be interesting to see how it looks in person when it is open. I can't wait.
 
that's a deep tank. One of those manatees looked kind of skinny though!

To answer your question definitively, yes, visitors will see the aquarium from above (as is shown in the photo). There is a viewing area right above the underwater gallery. So the aquarium is viewable from 3 levels: above water, at the waterline (there's a window just below the hut in the photo), and underwater.

WRS staff had a preview of the park over the weekend (and posted photos on social media), which means public opening will be happening real soon. Several exhibits including the problematic boat ride were still not ready though.

thanks for that. And good news about the bolded bit....it will make anyone going there in the next month or so happy, if it opens in time.....!
 
This place sounds fantastic and I would love to visit sometime. But I will certainly check the weather conditions before attempting to go as when I was at Singapore zoo in late October the humidity was absolutely unbearable and it was hard to concentrate and enjoy a great zoo. I normally love the heat but at only about 33c it was like walking around with your head in an oven and my feet got shockingly blistered.
