Woodland Diaries

By the way I haven't been posting because I don't want to waste your time by telling you I saw nothing.
The most interesting thing I've seen/heard, was the call of a female owl (I think tawny). I also heard a woodpecker, which I hope is a green.

I heard an owl the other day and have heard woodpeckers a few times recently.

Search for the kingfisher

After being searching for a wild kingfisher for years, and after my mum had seen one recently, I thought I had a good chance. As luck would have it My friends were going for a walk along the river bank, and invited me.

Unfortunately I failed on my mission, But I'm not giving up. seeing a wild kingfisher is now my main aim, over taking seeing a wild red fox.

although I didn't see a kingfisher, I did see an array of other animals
roughly 15 mallard ducks
2 mute swans
1 grey heron
two groups of herring gulls, with about 140 in each
4 common buzzards
a few crows
a few pheasants
various LBJ's

Went for a walk in the woods yesterday. As soon as I opened the door I spotted a male/female pair of Northern Cardinals. Besides that the walk was uneventful but I've been hearing a Bald Eagle pair for the past three days and yesterday the calls continued. I know the relative area where the nest is as I've observed it in past years but I can't seem to spot the talking birds...

Listen out for a high pitched call when you are walking alongside the river bank, if you don't see your kingfisher, you may hear it :)

On saturday I saw a extremely rare spirng/summer migrates, the Common rosefinch.
Has anyone else seen anything?

@epickoala, are you sure it wasn't a Common Linnet ([ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Linnet]Common Linnet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame])

Today I saw lots of Nuthatches on my way to university, quite strange I have never seen so many at the same spot, but very nice to see them displaying to each other.

Just checking, as there is not a reported sighting of rosefinch in the Netherlands in march and only 3 in april ;), but I see they are reported in Scotland in march also but still quite cool :)

failed again to see my kingfisher :(

If you go often enough you will eventually see one. Often its just a high-pitched call and a flash of bright blue flying fast down the river, but sometimes if you are lucky and quiet and in the right place, you can see one fishing from a perch by the water.

a friend of ours had a large garden pond -which I put in for them - and sh e used to get a wonderful kingfisher come and sit on the fence that surrounded it feeding on young goldfish, she wasn't pleased and I had to net the pond sadly no more sightings.
I discovered an unusual thing about them you can if your move slowly get quite close to them, they aren't nearly as flighty as I thought they would be. A pair used to visit another very large pond at one of my clients, they were real job stopper I must say, sadly a couple of years ago in a dry spell the Grey herons cleared the pond of fish so once again no more KF's.

Does any one know much about Buzzards there are 3 in the woods my client owns, and always only 3 some times they circle on thermals and calling attract others one autumn I watched a flock of over 40 but still only the 3 originals arrived back in the wood. One is much paler than the other two I have watched them about 10 years or so, but still never See or hear chicks. They circle over to the next farm house (about half a mile away) whose garden I also do and, some times harry the crows, especially at nesting time.
I also see a lot of Greater spotted and Green woodpeckers, in both places, watching a green woodpecker through the van window as I had lunch teaching it's motley looking chick how to find ants was ajoy to see.
I am very lucky being out side all my working life, except this week when we have up to 7 inches of frozen snow and work and money stops.:(

Last week I watched a weasel or small stoat kill a large rabbit it was like a snake sliding all over it and eventually managed to over come and drag it away I took a photo with my old mobile, but can't get it onto the PC so I can't tell how well it came out, the screen being so small.

I've been hinted that going early helps, but due to school and weather, I haven't been able to. Holidays soon so I will hopefully have a better chance.

In the holidays I will be going to the lake district for a few days. Does anyone have a good knowledge of birds and birding spots in the lake district (more specifically the bassenthwaite derwetn water region). I am especially trying to see common kingfisher and green woodpecker, so any info on where to see them and tips would be especially appreciated.

*sigh* yet another question.

I have been told that there is a wild black swan around a nearby town.
So................. Are black swans as protective and aggressive as mute swans?
