a friend of ours had a large garden pond -which I put in for them - and sh e used to get a wonderful kingfisher come and sit on the fence that surrounded it feeding on young goldfish, she wasn't pleased and I had to net the pond sadly no more sightings.
I discovered an unusual thing about them you can if your move slowly get quite close to them, they aren't nearly as flighty as I thought they would be. A pair used to visit another very large pond at one of my clients, they were real job stopper I must say, sadly a couple of years ago in a dry spell the Grey herons cleared the pond of fish so once again no more KF's.
Does any one know much about Buzzards there are 3 in the woods my client owns, and always only 3 some times they circle on thermals and calling attract others one autumn I watched a flock of over 40 but still only the 3 originals arrived back in the wood. One is much paler than the other two I have watched them about 10 years or so, but still never See or hear chicks. They circle over to the next farm house (about half a mile away) whose garden I also do and, some times harry the crows, especially at nesting time.
I also see a lot of Greater spotted and Green woodpeckers, in both places, watching a green woodpecker through the van window as I had lunch teaching it's motley looking chick how to find ants was ajoy to see.
I am very lucky being out side all my working life, except this week when we have up to 7 inches of frozen snow and work and money stops.
Last week I watched a weasel or small stoat kill a large rabbit it was like a snake sliding all over it and eventually managed to over come and drag it away I took a photo with my old mobile, but can't get it onto the PC so I can't tell how well it came out, the screen being so small.
