Golden wonders: The rare wombats who are so big they're perfect for a cuddle | Mail Online

They are one of the rarest animals in Australia, but one wildlife park has managed to find two golden southern hairy nosed wombats who were rescued within six months of each other.

Three-year-olds Icy and Polar have just gone on public display at Cleland Wildlife Park in Adelaide, Australia, after arriving from a rescue centre where they had been raised.

But in better news for the species, Cleland Wildlife Park has welcomed a pair of rare golden hairy-nosed wombats. Three-year-old Icy and Polar have just gone on public display after being raised in a rescue centre in Ceduna since 2011.

And while the animals are still young, Cleland Wildlife Park manager Nalini Klopp hopes that the pair may one day be suitable for breeding.

A bit of trivia for you ... the girl pictured on the right in those articles - Claire, who is the Education Officer at Cleland - is engaged to my wife's cousin.

Very cool! Your trivia is also cool, I guess.... :D

I saw some light coloured wombats at Gorge Wildlife Park outside Adelaide. Does anyone know if those are (a) southern hairy nosed wombats, and (b) golden?

they are southern hairy-noses at Gorge but they aren't "golden", they are albino (or something similar, perhaps leucistic).

The wombats at Gorge are actually common wombats. We have two that are albinos.

I thought they were actually cream?

:p

Channel 9's Today Show crossed live to Cleland Wildlife Park for weather presentations and featured some of the animals from the park.
