Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2013

I missed those exhibits for various reasons that I'd rather not share, but I feel that I had a decent trip there.
I don't think it's the pond exhibit.
A sign for the anemones said "First Time On Exhibit! The Zoo pioneered a technique for growing Tealia anemones. Born the size of pinheads in 2010, these young are now big enough to join the adults in this tank."
I do not know about the exhibit change in the tarantula terrarium, I just saw a sign.
Thylo and mxttfan- The Sand Cat exhibit is in the Small Mammal House, right before the first Meerkat exhibit. I didn't see the cats myself.
It's ok about the bear cubs. I really had hopes to see the Andean cubs though.

Were the anemones on these small shelf-like structures? Interesting about the Sand Cat.

Thylacine- No, the anemones were in an exhibit with adult anemones.
SCBI Royal is celebrating the hatching of a White-Naped Crane chick.
Today, Justin and Carmelita, 2 Cheetahs, turn 1 year old.

Yeah same here but they were on a little shelf thing. Maybe they've just moved them off the shelves and put them on the rocks with the adults.

I remember seeing Justin and Carmelita their first day on exhibit- the day before they were set to go on exhibit:D

I didn't take a picture of the anemone exhibit, but I do think they were put on the rocks with adults.
I also forgot to mention that I think the Caracal exhibit is closed as either the exhibit itself or area around it is being renovated, or perhaps that was another area near Great Cats and I somehow missed the Caracal.

from their facebook page.

Big news: our Andean bear cubs officially have names! Keepers chose the name Nicole for the female cub. They wanted to honor the memory of her father, Nikki, who passed away last August after a year-long battle with cancer. The male cub, Curt, is named in honor of late Zoo Advisory Board Member Curt Winsor.

I also just found out the zoo had a Sand Cat exhibit. Did anyone else know this?

Andrew, they posted a pic and info about their new Sand Cat on Facebook.

"Trying to get through this long stretch of Friday morning? So is Thor, the Small Mammal House's new sand cat! Thor, who is 7 years old, will serve as an ambassador to his wild cousins and teach Zoo visitors and researchers about the behaviors of this secretive species. Stop by and say hello (though be patient...he's a bit shy!)."

I just saw it while checking out their Facebook as well. No wonder the cat exhibit was empty exactly one week ago! That must have been a new exhibit, and Thor must have been in quarantine or getting acclimated to his home. Thanks!

From their Facebook.

Visit the Andean bear exhibit this weekend and early next week to see Chaska before she leaves for her new home at the Salisbury Zoo on May 1! Chaska was born at the Zoo in 2010. She is the offspring of Billie Jean and Nikki, our male Andean bear who passed away last year. She will continue to serve as an ambassador for her species at her new home.

Noticed yesterday signs for what appear to be two more new residents to the small mammal house...though did not see the animals themselves on exhibit yet. Signage up for brush-tailed bettong and Malagasy giant jumping rat. The small mammal building is looking as good as I can remember it in recent years.

I saw those signs on my visit 9 days ago... I thought they were already occupants of the Small Mammal House however, and just not on exhibit that day.
Personally, I liked the Small Mammal House for the great variety of mammals in there, but there were too many redundant exhibits.

Jumping rats are new animals soon to be exhibited. A zoo regular and friend told me about it today.

According to an email from the zoo, the Panda Cams are going to be upgraded so they'll be offline for a few weeks.
