RSCC is now expanding its overall footprint from 2 to 10 acres and is also constructing new homes for its current ring-tailed mongooses and fanaloka.

And the wailing of zoo enthusiasts rang out in the wilderness, crying: "Open thy gates, O Todd, that we may feast our eyes upon thy tarsiers! Let the Banded Palm Civets receive our worship! For we hunger and thirst in the (cultural) desert, whilst thy doors are closed unto us!"

Wow, that's not much smaller than Bristol -this could get very interesting if Todd's got the funds.

Amen, preach on Brother Mike.

Why is the RSCC closing down?

I visited the RSCC in March 2010 and thought it was wonderful. Like all of the other very small zoos around Britain (most of which have long ago closed) it had an amazing variety of species, many of which I had never seen in any other collections. I now see that the RSCC may be going to close, but want to know WHY? Too few visitors? No playgrounds or picnic tables? Hope that it will still be open when I visit Kent in 2 weeks' time!

@Hunting dogs: RSCC is already closed down. It is only open on a couple of days a year. However as far as I am aware it plans to re-open it's doors in the future.

Both of these statements are incorrect as far as current information goes; they haven't had any open days for well over a year now, and they have made no statements about re-opening in future. They closed as a full-time collection over 2 years ago now, and ceased the seasonal open days - becoming a private-only collection - in August 2011.

Their Facebook page has been updated . Two litters of rusty-spotted cat have been born - 2 males in April and a further 2 to another female this month .

The Rare Species Conservation Trust has helped with the construction of a new Sun Bear Rescue Centre .

Excellent news :) always good to have a population boost for rusty cats. Just hope this filters out into other collections.

If they do hopefully spread out then I'm hoping they make it to some more centrally located collections if you catch my drift... ;)

Had a quick check on Zootierliste and rusty cats realy need more breeding-results in Europe !
2 German, 1 France, 2 Czech and 4 UK collections keeping them so every birth is welcome !

Quite; of the 4 collections holding them in the UK, only Port Lympne has them onshow in a fully public situation. Hamerton has them offshow, RSCC is a private collection, and WHF is open only for specially booked sessions.

As you know, Hamerton's were due to go onshow at Easter, but that was delayed by the birth of kittens in February. Have the other 2 Bred them? I would assume PL have, as they have them in 2 locations in the park.

WHF only have the one individual at present, I think.

More great news - they plan to reopen either in Autumn 2013 or Spring 2014 , depending on how development work progresses . There will be set Open Days and Keeper for a Day . The site will be 5 times larger than before .
Look forward to a visit .

I'll believe it when it happens :p as they have changed their mind about open days in the past. Still good news though.
