Species you'd like to see in the UK?

was reading a book today wildlife in britain published by the AA and both Marwell and Blackpool are listed as having Black wildebeest so looks like they where different groups :)

One of Marwell's females was elderly and I think after a few years died there. Possibly the remaining pair were exported again.

Whar i'd really like to see in the uk-

giant otter shrew
giant otter - but i swear i've read of an otter park in the uk with one?
tayra
red colobus
douc langur
proboscis monkey (i know the last three wouldn't do well, but i can dream)
harpy eagle
californian condor
pronghorn
moor macaque
bonnet macaque

There is a male giant otter called manoki at the chestnut centre in derbyshire. They are hoping to get a female soon

Are there any Tayra in private hands? Kilverstone advertised Tayra as surplus stock when it closed (the second time round), but I fear they went to Southport.

I can't remember to be honest, I'm pretty sure he was from a sanctuary somewhere in south america but I may be wrong. There's a sign on his enclosure (which is the best otter enclosure I've ever seen) with information on it but I can't really remember what it said, sorry.

slightly off topic but where did chestnut get manoki from?

Didn't the otter come from the German collection that regularly breeds them? I am sure this is where the second individual is being sourced.

Otter shrews, red colobus -not in captivity, difficult husbandry
Proboscis, doucs, pronghorns - difficult to obtain, very delicate
Harpy, condors - difficult to obtain (impossible in condor's case), need alot of space and resources
tayra, macaques - not spectacular enough for most zoos radar.

Most of the species you have listed are pretty spectacular ones. I've only seen some of them before , however I've actually worked with moor macaques. Just the same (really) as sulawesi cresteds.

i know they're unrealistic but i can dream

Yep there are still a few in private hands 1 not far from Cotswold Wildlife Park.

That's great news, I hope they are breeding. The tayra can be an extremely active, interesting zoo exhibit. I wonder if they are/are related to the animals sold off by Kilverstone? The Southport animal/s I saw in the cage behind the coatis (next to the old leopard cage) may have predated the Kilverstone closure.

The old groups of stump-tailed/'toque'/bonnet macaques at Flamingo land were probably elderly non-breeding animals that had been imported at some point during the 1970s and had just been hardy enough to survive the bad old years once the zoo slipped into decline during the 80s. I say 'probably' because they may have bred at some point, but all were gone by the time the son took over and injected some cash into the enclosures.

Good looking back this old thread and seeing some of the members wishes coming true with the arrival of the likes of the tree kangaroo, bearded saki, brown hyena, giant panda, white tailed gnu and musk ox amongst others.

My choices would be:

Walrus
Emperor Penguins
Wombats

Also would like to see more zoos especally in south east have Polar Bears, Koolas
