Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens LA Zoo News 2012

2 gerenuks to Berlin, very exciting news, if confirmed, but knowing the poster mmp, bound to be true.

Well, considering this document comes straight from the zoo and said by the zoo's curator of mammals, it should be true.

The prospect of building a new Jaguar habitat greatly excites me! Especially after the big disappointment of its omission from Rainforest of the Americas plans. I read the report about a week ago.

there are no gerenuks left in Europe now? (I can't see any on Zootierliste)

I see. I always associate gerenuks with Frankfurt Zoo. Shame they're gone.

The November Zoo Commission Meeting minutes have been posted and here are the highlights:

-Rainforest of the Americas (RoA) was 53% complete as of November, and it's anticipated to be completed in May 2013.
-The zoo will be getting Mata mata turtles and Marine Toads. I'm assuming these will be for RoA.
-The zoo will also be getting Cotton-top Tamarins.
-The zoo will be exchanging Bighorn Sheep with various institutions.
-The zoo acquired Lowland Pacas. I've heard they are already in display in the Children's Zoo.
-Renovations are taking place to the Lion exhibit in order to obtain new lions.
-The zoo received $750,000 for naming rights of the Giant Otter exhibit.
-A clutch of 11 Giant Horned Lizard eggs was laid.
-Babirusa was born.
-Komodo Dragons have been introduced again for breeding.
-German reproductive specialist was at the zoo to work on elephants, gorillas, and zebras.

Hopefully we'll have a winter with weather that can keep the RoA on schedule. Can't wait to see the new giant otter and harpy eagle digs and the rest of it.

I'm surprised to hear about the lion renovations. I wouldn't think that there is really much you could do to that exhibit to make it a good lion exhibit given how small it is with a huge moat. Will be interested to see how that shakes out. Lions are obviously beloved and a main attraction that zoogoers want to see.

It is my hope that they will finally fill in the moat and provide glass-fronted viewing. That would be acceptable space for another pair. But I wouldn't hold my breath on it.

The next snow days will be February 9-10, 2013.

(Assuming the weather is ok. The last one I went to a couple years ago, I flew out just for that and it was postponed a week due to rain so I had to book another flight on Southwest and go back out the following weekend).

Just a quick update on gerenuk and wombat. The wombat came from Brookfield Zoo and the young gerenuk will be leaving in 2-3 weeks if all goes well.

Thanks for the information. Do you happen to know where the Wombat will be exhibited?
