North American zoos that have successfully bred Takin & Puerto Rican crested frogs...

Where and how did you find this information ?

From the International Zoo Yearbook.

The one I am reading at the moment is volume 13 (1973) which records births of American Moose at Madison (USA) 1.2 ; Milwaukee (USA)1.0; Quebec (Canada) 1.0

In Europe thy were recorded as breeding at Rotterdam (Netherlands) (1 D.N.S.) and Whipsnade (GB) 1.1

And also one more thing about Takins, I know the Denver Zoo had Mishmi takins, they were phased out and there paddock was demolished to make way for Toyota Elephant Passage, I have no idea wether the Denver Zoo bred them, does anybody know ?

You are most certainly right. Denver bred Mishmi Takins in the early 2000's.

Thanks bongorob, the International Zoo Yearbook series is something I really want to purchase !!!, It would be very nice to have every volume from 1960 to now, any idea how I can purchase those or where to get those ?

I wish they still had Mishmi takins, I do not like Toyota Elephant Passage because I think that space was better used for Mishmi takins, Waterbucks, Musk ox and other ungulates they had in that spot, also why are Mishmi takins being phased out of AZA ?

Also currently the places in the United States that have Mishmi takins are Iron Mountain Ranch aka Peace Reserve in Texas and also Metro Richmond Zoo

you can buy most of the volumes from NHBS: International Zoo Yearbooks: NHBS

If you want bargains, then do google searches for each volume and see if you can find second-hand ones on sale sites.

Because, like with so many other species with multiple subspecies in U.S. zoos, the AZA decided to focus on one subspecies and only one subspecies. The tiger and, to a lesser extant, the Black Rhinoceros is really the only exception here.

I wish ISIS were still available to the public! I know the Edmonton Valley Zoo has bred Takin. I think the Lincoln Park Zoo has too. I think Saint Louis has, but I’m not sure. I know Calgary has. I hope this helps a bit. Those are the only zoos I know of that have bred Takin. I’m sure there are more. I don’t know which zoos in Europe have. Also, I think the Denver Zoo has bred Takin. Maybe Toronto, but I could be mistaken. Oh, and The Wilds has bred Takin, I’m almost sure of it! Okay, I think that is all I can think of right now. Oh, and the San Diego Zoo!

I believe they are working on making it public again. I'd really love it if they could put out some data from the years they are closed.

The Wilds recently had 4 calves born. I'm sure the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) has bred Taken.

I sure hope so! I miss ISIS soooooo much! I thought The Wilds was breeding takin! I didn't know that SCBI was breeding takin, though.

I know SCBI has Sichuan Takins, don't know if they've bred them yet, though. It's a breeding facility so I'd hope so.

I don't remember if it has been mentioned already but the Cincinnati Zoo has bred Takins.

Now, is the Sichuan Takin a subspecies are a completely separate species from other Takin? I would love it if they bred them! I didn't know the Cincinnati Zoo had Takins, either. Which species/subspecies do they have?

The Sichuan Takin is a subspecies of Takin. All AZA zoos in the U.S. have Sichuan Takin including the Cincinnati Zoo. Denver did have Mishmi Takin for a while, though. I believe that's the one they bred, too.

Until recently I always thought that there was one species of takin with four sub-species:-

• Mishmi takin Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor
• golden takin Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi
• Sichuan takin Budorcas taxicolor tibetanus
• White’s (or Bhutan) takin Budorcas taxicolor whitei

However, Colin Groves considers that all four forms of takin are distinct species.

i.e. the Sichuan takin is now Budorcas tibetanus

yeah but he also probably considers the males and females to be separate species as well, so there's actually eight species :p

Okay, thanks. So, kind of like Tigers? Good to know!

Well the thing with tigers is they're starting to think that the Sumatran Tiger is a separate species and the Javan Tiger is also a separate species with the Bali Tiger being a subspecies. All the mainland subspecies are thought to be just that, subspecies of the Tiger.

The Queens Zoo has bred Puerto Rican crested frogs in an area not accessible to the public.
