Off-show animals

I totally forgot about the duiker, I now recall the complaints on here about it not going on show.:o I didn't realise the tamarins were off-show, I was sure I'd seen both in Miniature Monkeys on my previous 2 visits? I admit that I haven't been since 2010/11 though.
The birds comment was based on what I've seen posted on here, never paid that much to birds in zoos if I'm honest.

The tamarins went offshow in late 2009 - early 2010 I believe.

Pretty sure it was the time range I indicated, as I am given to understand they went offshow shortly prior to my first visit, which was 6th February 2010.

Moscow has a great off-show collection
Many reptiles, long-billed crow, silver dik-dik, and long-beaked echidna
The Silver Dik-dik is on public exhibit [at least it was when I visited last year]. However, many small mammals at Moscow are off-exhibit: not just the Long-beaked Echidna but a lot of unusual rodents. Also, the bulk of Moscow's reptile and amphibian collection is off-show.

In the USA, it's quite common for reptile collections in zoos to hold a lot of their stock off-exhibit. St Louis and Atlanta are two good examples.

Likewise San Diego keep tuatara, have signs boasting about their tuatara but you can't see them! David Brown was not impressed with this state of affairs if I recall correctly! :p

As for the birds,Chester does have alot off-show but apart from the Parrots, most are extra pairs of species on-show in the zoo or birds waiting to be found homes at other collections!
The last time I had a walk around some of the many off-show aviaries there were a lot more species there than just parrots, and not just extra pairs. :(

and they are Brothers Islands tuatara, the only ones outside NZ, which would be doubly disappointing for some I suspect....
