Europe's Future Zoo Exhibits

There is a lot of great information hidden in all the various threads dedicated to the individual zoos in Europe. But it is rather difficult to search through each one to find out what is on the horizon for European zoos. Would anyone be willing to post what are the up and coming new zoo exhibits in Europe?

I have only been able to find a few:

Chester's Islands exhibit
Bristol's "Wild Place" development of the Hollywood Towers site
Apenheul's Amazonia (with Giant Otters)
Berlin Tierpark's Alfred Brehm House

Anthony Sheridan's book What Zoos Can Do has as its focus the 80 "best" or most prominent zoos in Europe, and it is an absolute must-own for any serious zoo enthusiast. In Chapter 14 of the 400 page book there is a long listing of future projects at about 55 of the zoos, with very brief details on a couple of hundred exhibits. Those 18 pages provide a tremendous amount of information on what will transpire over the next few years, and in the second half of the book each zoo has 3 full pages of information provided on thick, glossy, colourful pages. Master Plans can always change at any given moment in time, but I'm not sure that there is anywhere else that has such a wealth of information about Europe's top zoos as well as future projects at those establishments.

More like the book details what has transpired over the past few years. In terms of zoos' future plans, that book is out of date. In addition most of the plans follow a vague timeline and only cover a fraction of Europe's zoos.

What I'm asking for are zoo developments in the making, not masterplans.

-Berlin Zoo's Bird House is opening this month!
-Wroclaw Zoo is building Afrykarium, which looks like it will be brilliant.
-Zurich Zoo's new elephant complex is under construction.

And it looks like Prague may have to do a fair bit of re-building after last weeks major floods.

And don't forget Prague's plan for the old Large Mammal Pavilion, due to be turned into an Amazon exhibit with manatee, jaguar macaws and more according to Jana.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, you beat me to it with the Afrykarium and Berlins bird house!

Regarding Czech zoos and what is in the making that I´m aware of:

Prague - a Chinese giant salamander house, with other Chinese reptiles/amphibians, originally scheduled to open on 28.9. this year (this may change, the house was under water).

Jihlava - a new African monkey house, hyena enclosure and a gibbon/babirusa house will open later this year, a new reptile/crocodille house in 2014.

Ohrada - a new temperate Asian area should open either later this year, or spring 2014, with Amur tigers, bears, gazellas, eagles, reptiles..

Zlin - an Indian tapir/siamang enclosure should open within 1 month.

Ostrava - an evolution pavilion will open early next year, with chimpansees, Diana monkeys, guerezas, red river hogs, an aviary, some teraria.
- an Asian safari with deer, markhors, wild asses etc. is under contruction too

Olomouc - the new Amur leopard enclosure should open any time now

Brno - a walk-through enclosure for rock wallabies, bald eagle aviary, African village with Greater flamingos, kattas, weawers wtc. should open next year

Usti - enlargement of the seal pool.

There are much more plans in the pipeline for the next 1-3 years, but these are the bigger projects you can see right now in different stages of completition.

Is there anything happening at Plzen?

Is there anything happening at Plzen?

Rather small projects, but they should start only after/during summer season:

- a new house for tamarins and other SA small monkeys
- enclosures for mediteranian tortoises
- a reconstruction of the old tropical house, with new 10 tanks for highly venomous snakes

Plzen works on their plan for the new Asian zoo area, the whole land (14 hectares) is already purchased, but it goes slowly to prepaire detailed construction projects and get the funds. In the most optimistic version, it will contain elephants, orangs, monkeys, tapirs etc.

EDIT: an actualised banner from Plzen´s facebook, inviting to the renovated Australian section.

On a smaller scale to some of the projects mentioned above, Saarbrucken Zoo are currently building a much-needed outdoor gorilla enclosure; I believe they are also converting the old seal pool into something for penguins.

Leipzig have recently started on their new Amur leopard enclosures.

And Frankfurt's new bear enclosures must be ready soon (they seem to have been building them for years....).

What is now under construction in Poland:

Wroclaw:
Africarium
Okapis and red river hogs paviilon
Dragon House - monitors from south-east Asia (including komodo dragons)

Chorzow Zoo:
Siberian tigers exhibit
Giraffes exhibit
Birds House

Poznan Zoo:
Brown bear sanctuary

Cracow Zoo:
Giraffes exhibit

Rotterdam

Just finished their new butterfly and South-American reptile hall: Amazonica
Is renovating the old elephant wing of the Riviera-building, will be housing pygmy hippos and black rhinos.
They will start building a new lion enclosure soon

Emmen:

Started to build a complete new Zoo

Apeldoorn:

Working on a "new" hyena enclosure
Just finished a Seychelles' hall with tortoises, fodies, herons and phelsuma geckos. It was a quite small project but still a very exciting one.

You mean Amersfoort ;)

Eh of course yes Amersfoort. Whoops :). Apenheul is not really able to come with big projects :)

-Berlin Zoo's Bird House is opening this month

Have anyone actually seen the new bird house yet, and what was your impressions of it, as I think it have already opened, and I have not gotten very much information about it. I am maybe going to Berlin soon, and I would love to see the bird house, just to bad I did not get the chance to see the old one.

There are some photos, and discussions, of it in the Berlin Zoo gallery. I don't think its open yet (although maybe you can walk through it), but the birds haven't moved in yet.
