With "the world's largest oceanarium" now open and the River Safari mere days away (fingers crossed), who amongst us is going to Singapore this year?

I'll be there at some point, possibly early August. I am quietly jumping up and down with anticipation :D

I think I know of Zoochatters in April, May and June. Not quite sure on dates though so I may be a bit off.

I've booked a flight into Singapore at the beginning of May as the starting point for my Asian Adventure. I'll only be able to stay for four days.

I was there last November for the first time but am hoping to be back in Thailand later this month and hopefully Singapore in May. :D

Today Zooish had arranged Singapore's (& Asia's?) inaugural zoochat meetup - a fantastic day spent at Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. It was also very nice to meet zoochatters Johan and zoomaniac. Thanks guys!

It was a great day with weather that was as good as it gets in Singapore. Very happy to have met fellow Zoochatters. Highlights were probably getting good photos of the tarsiers, giant flying squirrels, hog badgers and cloud rat at Night Safari (and breaking all the rules :D in doing so), having a giant flying squirrel glide over our heads, and sneaking a peek at the wolverine at the Zoo's yet-to-open polar bear exhibit (wolverine exhibit is pretty small though).

Hopefully this will be the first of many to come :)

A big big thanks to Zooisch for the organisation and also to Zoomaniac and Devilfish for this kind day. I join Devilfish that was a great meeting with a lot of discovery. Friendship, Happyness and Laugh are the characteristics of this day. And thank you and sorry to the tarsi:) :)

Hope that will happened again in Singapore or in any part of the world.

I wanna also say "thank you" to all of you guys (and specially @zooish for the perfect organization and the guided tour). It was absolutely great to meet you, walk around together and talk about zoostuff. And thank you once again for your consideration/understanding of the circumstances when traveling with family/kids and of course your support. It would be always a great honor and pleasure for me to guide everyone of you whenever you are in Zurich/Switzerland.

As @Johan wrote, I hope we could make this happen again...

I'm travelling to Singapore on Tuesday (14th May) for 4 nights and plan to revisit the Zoo and Jurong Bird Park (first visited Nov 2012). I also plan to visit the Night and River Safaris.

A couple of questions, as the River Safari is only partially completed what sort of time would be needed to get around it, bearing in mind that I tend to take my time and take a lot of photos?

Re. the Night Safari it looks like a lot of it can only be seen by tram, is that true? Also what's it like for photography, presumably there must be some lighting?

As I have 3 days I would like to do the Zoo (with perhaps a couple hours spent at the River Safari) and Night Safari in one day (a long day I know!) and the Jurong Bird Park on another day. That would leave me one day to do the Zoo or JBP again or perhaps something else in Singapore if I'm too knackered from all the walking!

To Question 1 (River Safari): Even if you intend to take a lot of pictures, 2,5 hours would be more than sufficent. This time schedule would also include the animal show, which I unfortunately missed (and so the crab-eating racoon).

To Question 2 (Night Safari): Yes, bigger animals like Asian Elephants, One-horned Rhinos, Gaurs, Bantengs as well as Dholes (and others) can only be seen by tram.
For taking pictures you have to keep in mind, that using the flash is prohibited in the whole park (Although I have seen some guys that have risk to use it). The exhibits are partially illuminated by artifical "moon light". But this is normally not enough. Use at least 3200 ISO (and even then it can't be sufficent for a good picture from an animal that is moving).

To question 3: I would recommend your plan, doing Zoo and Night Safari at the same day. It can be exhausting (drink a lot, and - very important - don't forget the insect repellant), but you can safe two times the cost for a cab (From downtown Singapore to the zoo it is about 22 to 25 Singapore Dollars one way - higher at night). If you have been succesful by taking picture at your first day in the zoo, then go to the brand new S.E.A. Aquarium (Marine Life Park) on Sentosa Island. It is brilliant and they have 2 species of manta rays on display!

Thanks Zoomaniac, appreciated.

I know what you mean about the taxi costs, last time I went to the zoo it cost $20 to get in and $40 for the taxis!

You should have taken the MRT + Bus! :D

Do most zoochatters use taxis to get to the Singapore zoos, or do they utilise public transport?

I went to the zoo first day but was too knackered after walking it for 8 hours to even contemplate staying on to do the night safari. I also decided to give the river safari a miss until next visit or until it is finished.

The next day I went to Jurong although didn't get there until 1pm, however as it was my second visit I knew what exhibits I really wanted to see so 5 hours was plenty time for me.

Had good intentions of using MRT/bus but in the end succumbed to the comfort of taxis. :o

I hope to be back in Singapore in the next few days and this time I will do the night safari and the river safari, no matter how weary my ageing legs are.
