hi, which zoos have the mhorr gazelles in their collections?
I know that this year the mhorr gazelles should arrive in zoom torino (near Torino, Italy)
Thank you

According to Zootierliste: - Berlin Tierpark, Frankfurt & Munich (Germany); Budapest, Rotterdam, Montpellier, and several Spanish collections.
(They are listing Zoom Torino as already having these gazelles)

Mhorr Gazelle

I used to visit the Parque de Rescata de la Fauna Sahariana [Centre for Saharan Fauna] in Almeria Spain. Its a load of pens around the castle, I visited several times in the 80's and believe its still going well. There is a You tube video of the Gazelle. They had very large Barbary sheep and other Gazelle

Almeria is the source population of all EEP/EAZA Mhorr gazelles + those in US zoos (I think).

Not sure of those in Al Ain ... (mystery).

All animals originate from 11 founders that were imported to Almeria in the 70ies. The American population started with animals from Almeria and (later) Munich.

today 4 mhorr gazelles are came in zoom torino from germany

As far as I know the Al Ain line is somewhat mysteriously clouded in history. (at least that was the Almeria line upto 5 years ago)

@KB, my source is the international studbook from 2005, but I see now that Al Ain isn't even mentioned in that studbook.....

Louisville Zoo might still have them, but also here in the US, San Diego Zoo, Cincinnati Zoo, St.Louis Zoo and Living Desert phased them out, but besides Louisville and Philadelphia there is a hunting ranch just outside of San Antonio that has them.
In Canada I dont know if Mountain view conservation center still has them, but for some reason I dont think so.
It seems that American zoos are focusing on Addra gazelles and European zoos are focusing on Mhorr gazelles.

aren't Mhorrs and Dama both subspecies of Dama gazelle?

There are actually 3 subspecies of Nanger dama, the 3 subspecies are the Mhorr gazelle (Nanger dama mhorr), the Addra gazelle (Nanger dama ruficollis) and then the nominate subspecies of Dama gazelle and the scientific name of that subspecies is Nanger dama dama, As far as I know there are Addra gazelles and Mhorr gazelles in captivity but not the nominate subspecies of Nanger dama, if that is not the case can somebody confirm this ?

I believe the nominate subspecies is Extinct, the Mhorr subspecies is Extinct in the Wild, and the Addra subspecies Critically Endangered.
