Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #2

Are Twycross looking for a new CEO because Suzanne Boardman has retired or has she gone for some other reason?
Lets just say she didn't survive very long after the FALSE allegations,of abuse of the Elephants, the zoo made agains't 3 Elephant Keepers!

It all sounds mysterious. Why would a zoo falsely accuse its staff of animal cruelty?

From that comment I take it you never meet or had dealings with the women then!!

Over the years that she was in charge many staff left, for very tenuous reasons, but her most strange decision had to be removing the TZA,from the zoo and then having to use paid staff to replace the jobs they did for free at weekends!

Zoogiraffe, I`d REALLY like to know why you are so sure that the cruelty accuse was false. Just because the keepers were not convicted? That says absolutely nothing. Have you seen the video of the events?

Not prepared to say why on the open forum, but I think the fact that the Police and CPS dropped it very quickly says it all!

I don't know how the law operates in Germany but in the UK we have a "innocent until proven guilty system". Therefore the inference, lacking any conviction, is that the keepers were innocent and to suggest otherwise would be slanderous and theoretically liable to prosecution. This, in theory, prevents malicious gossip arising/continuing.

His long-time companion Choppers is doing well and will be introduced to some of the other chimps in the near future.

Several of their oldest Chimpanzees have died off in recent years- this is the second in the last few months, after 'Ricky'. While it must be upsetting for their carers to lose old much-loved favourites, there will come a time in the not-too-distant future when their numbers have reached more manageable group proportions.

Which enclosure is 'Choppers' in?

Dear Yassa

Are you someone who believes a conviction proves that the accused were guilty and that an acquittal means they got away with it?

The purpose of the criminal justice system is to determine who has and has not committed crimes. I infer from another recent post about the police and CPS being quick to drop the case that it didn't even come to trial.

Animal cruelty is not taken lightly in the UK. If there was evidence to convict those accused they'd have been prosecuted. As they were not convicted then we have to accept that those who investigated the allegations found they had no case to answer.

Dear zoogiraffe

I'm working on the assumption that you made a typo. If not I not sure to which women you're referring.

I never had the pleasure/misfortune to meet Ms Boardman (or whatever she is now called). I once met the Education Team.

All I know is that when she was appointed following Miss Badham's retirement is that she made some changes that a member of staff told me about, which had generally met with a positive response from staff: clear job descriptions; contracts of employment; pay increase; more holidays.

Much more recently, I've joined ZooChat and from what I read all is not well at Twycross.

I cannot even begin to understand why she'd get rid of TZA. What a perverse decision!

Put it this way; things are indeed not well at Twycross, but they are still a lot better than 12 months ago when Susie was in control!

I do not know what has been going on at Twycross. I hope it is not terminal; I have a soft spot for Twycross. Ms Boardman may be guilty of some of the things of which she's accused, but where were the trustees? Did they completely abdicate any responsibility? Did they exercise no control over their director, CEO or any other fancy title she cared to use.

Whilst not wanting to get involved in a big debate where I'm sure no-one has the full facts I do agree that (at least some of) the trustees were potentially neglectful in their duties and (not) exercising their discretion/power. That said, I believe there have been significant changes in trustees in the past year and there's little point crying about split milk at this point.

Yes I did make a typo it happens every now and again.

Yes she did alot of good things for the staff when she first took over, but it only took a matter of time before that changed to one of fear of saying anything agains't her by many staff. No things have not been good from the day that Mrs Boardman took over the zoo, lets just say if she was a saleperson she could have sold sand to Saudi Arabia!Hence the reason why the Trustess didn't do anything because most of them believed every word, that she told them about how well the zoo was doing, and those that didn't were slowly forced out!

As for why she got rid of the TZA it was because she felt threatened by a couple of members of it!

Next to Benji & co in the house behind the (ex) green mile. Would seem quite likely she'd fit in with them or the oldies group.

I still miss Ricky.

All Human nature is here....;)

I agree that the past is the past and this is all History now, though the zoo still seems to be paying for it. But I do have one last question- was this lady a ZSL vet before she went to Twycross- or is that incorrect and she was from some other background?

Good news: looks like the 'old gorillas' chimp exhibit is being meshed over to allow a climbing frame to be added.

It is good news. I wonder if somehow it will only be partially 'roofed'- over the section where they add the climbing stuff- or completely- so it becomes another cage!!;) Either way I don't care-its a big improvement and this enclosure will no longer look like just an empty yard. Very encouraging to see these sorts of changes happening- KEEP AT IT TWYCROSS!!:D

Yes, a former vet at London Zoo, and before that used to help at a vetinary surgery in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, the vet she worked for was Alfred White, better known as James Herriot!

Wow, bit of history there. The reason I asked was because Vetinary skills and astute business acumen are usually world's apart and not usually met in one person. If they wanted a top notch vet, that's one thing, but that wasn't her real job at Twycross, was it?
