Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #2

went down today

meerkat enclosure is well underway

work also started in old wildcat enclosure, looks like steel netting gone up on top

borneo longhouse has re-opened looks like several new support posts

just as a side note does anyone know what happened to kerry havent seen her in a long time
If you meen kerry the last Phayres Langur outside of South East Asia, she died of old age a couple of years ago!

Any idea what species will go into the old wild cat enclosure?

I really do hope it is more along the theme of the Bornean longhouse. As it was before it really was soooo out of place and context!!? :(

not yet, with the new steel meshing on the old wildcat enclosure im wondering if thats where they might be going

yes it was indeed that kerry, we stopped going for a couple of years due to... well a little disapointment really, shame shes gone

actually proposed to my wife in the orangutan house, that was 10 years ago, only missed those two years since, other than that its been every 2/3 weeks reguallar

Twycross Visit (30/6/13)

Had a short visit today, mainly to see the gorilla's and Lope in particular. The gorilla's have had a new shade house constructed which they have been using. This slightly limits the view for visitors but is better for the gorilla's as it gives them more privacy. Biddy, Asante and Lope's name signs have been taken down.

Looking at the newest version of the map on the zoo's website (Twycross Zoo Map | Twycross Zoo | World Primate Centre), the yellow-throated martens are shown to be in an enclosure by the Bornean longhouse, near the bush/dog coati mix and the caracaras. Is that the old wildcat enclosure?

It is, yeah. I'd like to see that area rethemed or even de-themed, as has been said before, there's not as lot of Borneo about it!

I never figured out why Twycross built the Borneo Longhouse exhibit in the first place- was it because the lady left money for it? IMO it is just a cultural exhibit which has no connection with anything else at Twycross at all.

Whilst, if correct, I'm quite excited to finally see the Yellow-throated Martins (great beasts) on display I'm a little concerned the old Wild Cat enclosure is a little on the small side for a mustelid of their size which, in my experience, can tend towards stereotyping. Time will tell (they may be enlarging the enclosure for all I know).

It was because the then Director liked the idea of it,what more reason would you need than that!Have to wonder just how many visitors actually realise they are looking at genuine Bornean Log Canoes!

They would sure find in a good place at NZS Chester Zoo! :D

Perhaps the original intention of purchasing the canoes was to sail everybody down the river:).

Nah, I reckon the intention was to serve as a reminder that the Director at the time was taking Twycross up **** creek without a paddle!

The current CEO is just ad interim and remains part of the Council / Advisory Board. She was never meant to be in this position long term and given the range of developments since she is doing a good job. I assume they are looking for someone with both zoological and managerial skills.

Managerial skills yes, but at the bottom the advert says they will consider candidates from a swathe of other areas other than Zoological- Leisure, Industry etc. I guess it will depend who fits the bill best overall.

Are Twycross looking for a new CEO because Suzanne Boardman has retired or has she gone for some other reason?

She left almost a year ago now, having "resigned"; there has been an interim CEO since then.

Male Chimpanzee, Louis passed away yesterday aged 37. Statement from the zoos Facebook :(

Twycross Zoo is very saddened to report that Louis, one of the longest standing members of our chimpanzee family, passed away yesterday.

During his 37 years Louis was well loved and respected for his gentle and caring nature, and will be greatly missed by all. His long-time companion Choppers is doing well and will be introduced to some of the other chimps in the near future.

It is a very sad time for keepers and staff here at the zoo and we would like to thank you for your continued support.
