They are beautiful birds. I saw them in Scotland some years ago and only found out later how comparatively rare they are- much more so than the Red-throated Diver.
This technique of the floating raft islands for nesting on is a great idea- simple but very effective.
They are indeed a beautiful, beautiful species. The weird thing is that I have only ever seen Red-throated once, but have seen this species about half a dozen times!
I had similar experience, having seen Black- throated on several occassions and many years before I saw the commoner Red-throated. I must have just been in the right places in the N.W. of Scotland.
