Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #2

Yes I did make a typo it happens every now and again.

Yes she did alot of good things for the staff when she first took over, but it only took a matter of time before that changed to one of fear of saying anything agains't her by many staff. No things have not been good from the day that Mrs Boardman took over the zoo, lets just say if she was a saleperson she could have sold sand to Saudi Arabia!Hence the reason why the Trustess didn't do anything because most of them believed every word, that she told them about how well the zoo was doing, and those that didn't were slowly forced out!

As for why she got rid of the TZA it was because she felt threatened by a couple of members of it!
Then I think it's clear the trustees abdicated their responsibilities. Their role is to act as a check on the CEO. They shouldn't be in awe or fear of her. She should have had no role in ousting trustees. It would appear that they rolled over and let her walk all over them. That being so they should bear a certain responsibility for whatever has gone wrong at Twycross and the entire blame ought not to be laid at one person's door.

It's an extension to the small monkeys, there is a large plastic tube going from the corner up to the trees. It looks pretty smart.

How are they getting on with the 'covered' chimp outdoor enclosure(the old Gorilla House near the Elephants). Is it finished yet?

Any photos of what the outside looks like now would be welcome in the Gallery.

They had the roof on and were roping up the inside on Tuesday afternoon. They were also working on a new Prairie Dog exhibit at the back of the old Pets Corner, behind the Penguins.

Do you know if the Chimps on that side had access to the larger outdoor area before it was roofed, or only the indoor areas? I believe Joe's old outdoor section definately wasn't used, due to the safety aspects.

I'm gad to hear about the prairie dog enclosure as the old one looks like a tip. Although withh a bit of doing it up that could become a great outdoor reptile enclosure. maybe some reptiles at twycross that aren't tortoises!

According to the zoo website there are more brand new exhibits coming soon.
It already mentions the prarie dog enclosure. Also what do you think they will put in the old prarie dog enclosure.

Would be best if they just knocked it down and grassed it over!

The old Prairie Dog house behind top Chimps was bigger than their current one.

I hope some new enclosures soon would include for Otters, Dholes, more on the current Primate enclosures etc.

I think twycross needs to improve the enclosure for

Dholes
Tufted deer
All of the great apes ( I know there planning to majorly improve the bonobo house)
Otters
Gibbons and all other monkeys in cages with mesh

There are lots of other improvements that need to be made but I feel these are the most important

To bring them up to a higher standard, yes. There have been some cosmetic changes afoot, but unfortuntely I cannot see any major structural rebuilds happening soon, they just don't have the money, unless , as with the Bonobos, there is a private or company donation involved. I think in this case its only for improvements to the outdoors anyway?

IMO the one that needs it most is the whole of the Orangutan House-IMO this is really not suitable any more in this day and age, and also the indoors is very cramped for them. I would like to see that become a priority but alas am not expecting any changes soon.

I think you will find all the 'brand new exhibits' they are talking about will be much smaller-scale ones.

I'd love to see a new otter enclosure, and maybe a new species to go in the existing enclosure. Maybe a small caiman species?

I spoke to a zoo keeper and they said their are plans for 2014 to completely revamp the bonobo house. They are going to use lots of information to show how rare the bonobos are. Yes I agree the orangutan enclosure really does need to be changed

Yes a small Caiman would look great in that exhibit, but they would have to spend a fortune to heat it so that the Caiman could use it all year round.Personnaly I would prefer to see Twycross go out of keeping any reptile that isn't common in the pet trade, until they take on a specialist Reptile keeper, which is something they haven't had since the Reptile House, became the walk through Tropical House.

I thought the older chimps were out in Joe's old enclosure a few weeks ago but I might have the wrong one because one Twycross enclosure looks so much like another. Jambo & co coul go out in their side.
