Bristol Zoo (Closed) Bristol Zoo news 2013

Excellent news; though let us not count our okapi-chickens too soon....

I visited today; no sign of an okapi calf, two adults were out in their separate paddocks but no calf. Do you know something TeaLovingDave?
The sand cat is either pregnant or just very fat.
No sousliks but there were Zulus. A group of older school children from South Africa dressed in what looked like springbok skins were performing traditional dances and song to raise money for solar panels for their school. To be honest I thought this kind of cultural display was fitting for a place full of exotic plants and animals (A zoo in other words) but considering the history of ethnological shows in zoo of the past, I had to wonder what others might think of it.

I do not, other than the fact Okapi are pretty delicate and so it may be a little early to get excited over the birth - the calf may not be out of the woods yet.

Well that's pants. It looked really good yesterday, running around/jumping and feeding from mum.
If I remember rightly the female had a miscarriage last year so was really pleased to see the calf yesterday.
I'm working there tomorrow so I will find out about the calf I saw on Saturday :)

I didn't see the Okapi calf on Monday but there was no talk of anything bad having happened.

It was born on the 11th May and is a girl. :)

Spotted this article earlier on the Daily Mail website and Bristol Zoo themselves have posted an article confirming the birth of a female Okapi named K'tusha which was born on the 11th May. Wonderful news for such a beautiful species!

Ben

Very happy news to have confirmed

A pair of Wrinkled Hornbills (not sure of source) are now at the zoo in the Round Avairy which has recently been refurbished. :D
It now holds the Wrinkled Hornbills, Black Hornbills, White-Winged Wood Duck and Roul-Roul.

Judging by the quality of postings on the newspaper thread, I would say we have a lot of judge, jury and executioner types. The world would be best without them!

I have yet to see any convincing evidence of a purported incident at Bristol Zoo. I would further concur it is open to question whether an internal investigation should be in the public domain at all. It really does not bode well for any correct handling of the case both for the zoo and members of staff. If an internal investigation would show up something really is amiss than it is perhaps the right moment to have it publicized. Now you got the boulevard press breathing down your neck ...

Perhaps the very fact that it is seals + "punching" (how does one accomplish to that?) and the animal welfare lobby in the UK has more to do with this sensitivity to the subject matter.

I would think you would punch a seal the same way you punch anything to be honest. The facebook post by the zoo that links to the press release (which was where I first saw the news) seemed to suggest the media had got hold of the information first and the press release was a response to that, but I may have been misreading the post. I'm not sure why you would expect to see any evidence when it's just the start of an investigation-clearly only very limited information has been released and we will have to wait to know more detail (if we ever get it).

Can anyone confirm whether the seal scales are still off-show?

Tunanta, the way I would read my post is exactly that ... I have not yet seen anything really amiss at Bristol and yes the newspaper is probably blowing it all out of proportion (which is ... what I would expect from the Daily Mail). I do hope the internal investigation can proceed without them looking in any further and that any action that needs to be taken will not be forced upon them by media (most unwise ... viz the TWZ elephant keepers).
