Exotic Animal Pet Trade

I have seen many ads for capuchins and marmosets, I have even seen a kinkajou for sale in NSW
Please explain is this is legal and what is for offer in exotics in Australia
Thanks
Nicholas

Exotic pet trade must be illegal around the world, unfortunately isn't.

My brother told me of someone in Canberra last week advertising cheap Hyacinth Macaws and Capuchins for sale - on Facebook! I told him it was a scam, and the seller has been booted from that group.

A local business couple up here bought a pair of Hyacinths from the internet last year. Sent the money, still waiting for the birds!

A couple of months ago a well meaning local wildlife "rescuer" was insistent that I house two beautiful baby Capuchins that she was going to "rescue". She even sent me the baby photos of them - complete with nappies of course. The appointed "rescue" day has come and gone but my Capuchin population hasn't increased!

While I dislike hand-reared pets and think this should be discontuined, there exist thousands of responsible private breeders of exotic species.

Zoos don´t have the capacity to keep all species. A joint effort between private breeders and zoos is the future way to go for survival of smaller species like Asian turtles or birds.

This is clearly a scam considering it is Australia you are talking about. I´ve actually seen similar ads in my local media, and those sweet little capuchins and chimps, together with unreasonable cheep large parrots were clearly a scam too.

On the other hand, the scale of private keeping of exotic pets steadily increases. Different marmosets for sale are now a stable part of my local ads, and they are legitimate. I´ve checked the Czech CITES I register and there were 87 Hyacinth macaws as of 30.6. this year, an increase by 17 within one and half year (it counts only animals born/hatched or imported since 2004, older registations are not digitalized).
