San Francisco Zoo San Francisco Zoo 2012-2013

The improvements are not really that much. They knocked down a wall in between the grassy and concrete grottos. The exhibit did not increase in size as they both could previously use it. It looks like some minor planting has been done. Now I have to go change my blogpost about polar bears exhibits which is coming out tommorow.
 
Hello everyone, I,m new here to zoochat and would like to add to this thread...

It seems as if the zoo's Americas Capital Campaign will renovate (again) the South American Rainforest Building, adding a squirrel monkey & capybara exhibit, as well as create a new wolf exhibit.

According to the zoo's Twitter feed, San Francisco is now home to six species of lemur with the addition of a pair of red-fronted brown lemurs!

That brings the total count to 19-lemurs!

The zoo now has the following lemur species (and subspecies):
-Aye-Aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis)
-Black and White Ruffed (Varecia variegata variegata)
-Black (Eulemur macaco)
-Red-Fronted Brown (Eulemur rufifrons)
-Red Ruffed (Varecia variegata rubra)
-Ring-tailed (Lemur catta)

The last species is Blue-eyed Black Lemur, not Aye-aye, but the zoo does have Aye-aye.
 
Maybe SF should just get out of the bear, big cat, and great ape business altogether and turn the main part of the zoo into the world's most kick-butt lemur exhibit. It would play to their strengths.

So long as it became a walk-through exhibit, I'd be down for that change.

Hmm.... He's such a little fellow. Komodo dragons must be all the rage. From a casual observation, it seems like all the zoos (that don't already have them) are getting them.

The 29th is a Thursday, I think I can get out there in time. I guess the ground hornbills are getting the boot, though. I'm sure the koalas will enjoy having a giant reptile just across the way.

I don't think the southern ground hornbills are moving out of their current enclosure. If you look at an image on google maps (the attachment shows a screenshot of the exhibit space), you can see a small building north of a large netted enclosure, which is directly north of a large-ish building. The smaller building and netted enclosure are currently where the southern ground hornbills are kept, and I am assuming that the larger building (the "former Binowee Landing entrance") is where the new komodo dragon is to be exhibited.

The new "Elinor Friend Playground" planned to open Thanksgiving weekend. Hopefully now the San Francisco Zoo will keep up in the construction of needed new exhibits.
 
Here's some more information on the new playground, the most recent time I was at the zoo, it seemed virtually finished. If you look closely at the picture in the link, you can see plants on the playground structure, if these plants were to grow out, I think it will look pretty nice and naturalistic.
