Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #3

Well the mud is already out in the open (and I was just being a bit sarcastic ... perhaps undeservedly so). I apologize!

Seriously and more realistically, perhaps announcement of the new bonobo habitat being built on site for which finance is secured and/or perhaps even the improved financial situation due to the settlment out of court with the former bankers .. or the unveiling of a new vision / masterplan complete with new management team in place at the helm?!

I still find that giraffes is a long shot (even though I am more than a closet giraffe fan myself). But then, I hold ZG's more than informed opinions in the highest regard (which is I am sure by popular demand from TWZ regular visitors, as is lions, tigers ... et cetera).

P***ing in the wind here but maybe it's something to do with KUNO! I know I'm probably miles off but my fingers are crossed all the same! :p

Bonobos- someone correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression its only an upgrade of the existing enclosure?

It would appear I have jumped the gun with my 2 guess,it was in fact the birth of 2 young Snow Leopards!
 
Called into Himalya unexpectantly over lunch, as I ended up in the area. After a short wait I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one of the cubs and an adult. The cub and adult (presume mother) didnt stay out for long. Unfortuantly as it was unplanned I only had my iphone on me so the photos were not of a high quality.

Could somebody tell me what the kuno project was and what animals it involved. Also have they postponed or decided not to ever build it

It was an Asian carnivore complex to be built opposite the elephants. It was to feature dhole, striped hyaena, tiger and lion. Somebody on here said that a bear species was rumoured as well.
Whether it's postponed or not is something I do not know though.

Kuno was a propsed new exhibit for tigers, Asian lions and Dholes, it was talked about for some years and notices were placed around the zoo stating that it was "coming soon". Following the resignation of the C.E.O. last year it was stated that the zoo would not be going ahead with this project, presumably due to finances, One zoochat member enquired at the planning department of the local authority with a view to seeing the plans, they did not exist.
 
I was just wondering as only recently started to visit the zoo does anyone know which animals they have successfully bred and how many of each animal they have currently
 
Visited yesterday here is some news from my visit

- I saw the baby snow leopards and they looked very healthy

- Does anyone have any ideas what they are putting in the old prarie dog enclosure

- I found out a baby orangutan is due in December and a baby elephant is due in march.

- Hollie the chimp looked pregnant but that is probably me just hoping for a baby chimp

- The penguin parade is not working very well and neither is monkeys in trees.

- Yellow throated martens were very shy and only came out of indoors when their food had been put in their enclosure

- Also is one of them younger as their is a large size difference

- Is their only one hyena as their is no sign of another one.

- Saw plenty of babies snow leopards, Pileted spider monkey, bonobo, gorilla, orangutan, penguin, spectacled owl, capybara x2, and siamang.

My suggestion for re-using the old Praire Dog enclosure would be knock it down and grass the area,as the enclosure is not fit for keeping anything in it!

The size difference in the Yellow-throated Martens I think is due to the fact that they are a pair!

As for the Arabina Striped Hyena last time I visited they still had 0.2,but they had to be kept separate,as they were fighting for dominance,hence you will only see 1 as the other is locked away inside the house.

Finally I am guessing this is a typo "Pileted spider monkey",as I have never heard of this species so guess you mean't to say either Pileated Gibbon or one of the Spider Monkey species kept at Twycross?

Is there no intention of getting a male and sending one of the females elsewhere? There doesn't seem a huge point in keeping these animals at Twycross otherwise.

It is larger than other Old World martens; males measure 500–719 mm in body length, while females measure 500–620 mm. Males weigh 2.5-5.7 kg (5.5-12.6 lbs), while females weigh 1.6-3.8 kg (3.5-8.4 lbs)

I do hope you do not mind me pointing out that these are of the Arabian subspecies and endangered as well!!! Hence, I cannot understand why they acquired them in the first place (given their collection).

Unless we - the BIAZA / EAZA region - are really serious about trying to breed from known source animals and a shared determination to acquire more of the same species, including some males.

I would much more expect a species like striped hyaena at say Marwell Zoo. See: Arabian oryx, dorcas gazelle et cetera ... (perhaps even re-acquiring sand cat).

I think at the time it would have been a case of getting something carnivorous which would hopefully be of interest to the visitors after this enclosure was vacated by the Asian lions, which as we know, were supposed to return in the new Asian carnivore exhibit which did not materialise.
 
Sorry but I can't remember what the old praire dog enclosure looks like, but would it not be suitable for dwarf mongoose or similar
