Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Noahs Ark Zoo Farm

I think the owners of the park were referring to the father of one of the disciples of Jesus, Saint James, who's mother was called 'salome'. I just thought it was from the magic roundabout, but of course this is a christian zoo, I had forgotten that.

I'm going to sound like a right pedant but Masai is probably not apt as Chapman's zebras are from southern Africa and the Maasai people are from eastern Africa. I agree with your sentiments though!

Yes, Masai would be better for a Grant's Zebra stallion. Maybe 'Zulu' would have been more fitting than 'Zebedee' for this Chapman's male?

The collection that 'Masai' came from already had a female Chapman's called 'Zuli' and, perhaps even more unfittingly, another male called 'Nairobi'. Two Grant's there were 'Zambezi' and 'Umlhanga'. The point being that zebras are African and these are all African-sounding names. To the general public, and to a great extent zoo personnel themselves, the aptness of the individual names is irrelevant. I think geographically-derived names are far more desirable and less derisive than aliterative ones (whether they are stricty correct or not). The Biblical link is a meaningfully coincidental.

Can you tell us the collection/s the three Noah's Ark Zebras came from- was it two different places?

I'd be interested to know too. Did you know Whipsnade have a single Chapman's stallion- presumably the last of their old group- and he's now about 36 or 37 years old- yet still in superb condition. I wish they would send him away or bring in females for him, he has been solitary for many years now.

The Chapman's stallion is Charlie and I believe he was originally the Marwell breeding stallion whose genes were over stated. Whipsnades batchelor paddock was thought to be a suitable place for him to live out his retirement.

Now I'm a bit confused as there are two male Chapman's there now... The original one(the 36 year old as he was then, older now) I have seen for many years- are you referring to him- or the one that's joined him in the last year or so?

Well according to ISIS they don`t have any Zebra but they do have 1.2.1 Somalia Wild Ass,but i know thats wrong as i know where the male came from and it most definetly wasnt Marwell.I think zebedee101 may have got the wrong end of a thread.

Not sure which place your talking about. Marwell keep all three zebra species + Somali Asses. Whipsnade have Grevy's zebra plus the two male Chapman's. They used to have a herd of Chapman's a long time ago which is why I thought the very old stallion was a remnant survivor of that group. I've seen him alone there, sometimes in a new paddock, on many visits over the years. For a long time he was in the Nile Lechwe paddock. Now he's in the one behind the waterfowl lake. The 2nd male has joined him since last year but the person I spoke to wasn't sure where this one came from..

As Noah's Ark Zoo farm expands I wonder if they will stick with their principle of not opening on a Sunday . I would have thought it is normally one of the busiest days of the week for a zoo .

Heavens(sorry..:( ) are they not open on Sundays? I'm sure that in school termtime it MUST be the busiest day for Zoos. In my experience Saturday is a very quiet day for zoos- people do other things- I often used to take advantage and use it for a nice quiet zoo visit.

The one I was talking about was the old one, Charlie, he has to have been at Whipsnade for at least 14 years. I'm not sure when Whipsnade stopped keeping Chapman's but it had been told to me that it was an ex breeding stallion from another collection. He was kept in the batchelor paddock which is opposite the Grevy's zebra, just before the entrance to the drive through asia. I know nothing about a second Chapman's stallion at Whipsnade.

I`m on about Noahs Ark Zoo Farm the subject of this thread not sure where the rest of you are talking about.

I hope they do as it means if the locals want to see zoo animals on a sunday they will have to go to Bristol and see a real zoo, just an aside Bristol visitors figures are well down on last year.

My fault as I sidetracked to talking about Whipsnade Zebras in an earlier post on this thread. Anyone yet can tell us where the three zebras at Noahs Ark Zoo Farm came from?

Okay, I have it now.:) Yes, this male was for a long time in the paddock you describe. I'm presuming he was Marwell's original Chapman stallion, arriving as part of their first group circa 1970. As he was still there in June this year he's now nearer 40 and being wildcaught, could be older still! A 2nd younger male has joined him since last year and they are in the paddock behind the waterfowl lake. Thanks for the information.
