Calgary Zoo Calgary Zoo news 2012-2013

The animals forced out of the zoo are starting to arrive at their new homes. The anteaters are now in Moncton. Still wish they had come to Toronto instead. Moncton will get to keep them, originally they were on temporary loan but thats been changed. They were preceded to Moncton by the macaws who will be on display this weekend.

Sad News

Late Monday, August 12, one of our Humboldt penguins passed away.

Three-year old Guillermo came to Calgary in December 2011 from Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY prior to the opening of Penguin Plunge.

Penguin keepers noticed on Saturday that he was lethargic and didn’t have much of an appetite. He was monitored closely by keepers and vets, given daily treatment and assistance eating, but showed no improvement. He was moved to the zoo’s Animal Health Centre on Monday where sadly he passed away. Guillermo had been well and was in good condition prior to becoming ill on Saturday.

A post mortem examination was conducted late Monday and we are awaiting test results expected in approximately one week to determine the cause of death

What is going on with the Zoo emptying out and indefinitely loaning out various species? Do they no longer have the means or capacity to bring them back after the clean-up?

Calgary Zoo plans to demolish its South American complex, which is not the end of the world as that old building was already due to be bulldozed/overhauled as part of the zoo's new Master Plan. That is the reason why so many animals have been sent away to other Canadian zoos, simply because they will not be returning. The old South American zone was the most outdated section of the entire zoo, and it also included a few Asian and African animals.

These animals include:

• 2 Hyacinth macaws
• 7 Yellow-headed Amazon parrots
• 2 Prehensile-tailed porcupines
• 2 Two-toed sloths
• 2 Giant anteaters
• 2 Andean condors
• 5 Goeldi's monkeys
• 3 Cotton-topped tamarins
• 2 White-handed gibbons
• 4 Black-handed spider monkeys
• 3 Debrazza monkeys

Prior to the flood, the zoo was looking for new homes for several other animals which will bring the total animals to be moved to 45 individuals representing 15 species.

Any plans for what might eventually ensue in this part of the zoo?
(probably not any time soon as the cost of clean up from flooding and repair/renovation of affected buildings looms large over the current budget)

A large portion of the zoo will be transformed as well over $100 million was planned to be spent before the flooding. To see what the future zoo will look like it means spending time analyzing this document:

On the link below is a clear map of the future zoo, including a Wildlife Interpretative Center where the current South American building is. Also of note are the giant pandas (2018-2023) who will eventually make way for orangutans.

Financing Future Development

Incidentally, the zoo now has a completely redesigned website.

The female elephants will be headed to Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington next April. The girls are lucky to be moving to what looks like a very nice home. They should be very happy there. They will be joining the National Zoos three older females, Ambika, Shanthi, Bozie (a new arrival herself) and young bull Kandula. Interesting note though is that Maharani is Kandula's aunt via his father, so he shouldnt be her breeding partner.

I'm disappointed that the Los Angeles Zoo was not chosen for the three females as the zoo has an unrepresented male in prime breeding age and only two females, let alone great weather year round!
