Duchess and gay story

Andrew, go onto Youtube, Whatever happened to the likely Lads, theme tune, one line I think you will like"The only thing to look forward to is the past":)

No need to go on to YouTube! I'm always quoting that line - I think I have done somewhere on this site. Until a few weeks ago when TOTP 1978 was on Thursday evenings (I was singing along with The Dooleys earlier tonight) it was followed for a while by "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads", so I made sure I heard the crucial line....and watched the programme.

Back to Paignton, I have never liked the raised viewing inside the house.

I agree. Although I've seen giraffes at other zoos from ground level, the thrill I got when I went into the giraffe house at Chester to be confronted by huge, stamping, close-up animals was quite something.

I wonder what Black Rhinos look like from above.

This sign at the zoo clearly explains the situation regarding Duchess

Has anyone ever thought of Duchess retiring to a sanctuary, not another zoo, but a sanctuary designed especially for retiring elephants. After years byherself, she would finally get a chance to be with other females of a similar health status and live out her days in freedom. There are two established in the USA and admittedly this journey would be too much for an old elephant. However, plans are in place for a European retirement sanctuary in France. Should this go ahead within the next year, wouldnt this be the best option for Duchess?

For reasons explained in the post before yours it really is unwise - nay I would say unethical - to ever want to relocate this particular elephant for so-called "welfare" purposes to a "sanctuary". That sanctuary is the Paignton Zoo and she is very well cared for by the pachyderm staff at Paignton as it is!

Whilst I respect your opinion and assume you have some involvement in the zoo to be able to comment on the care she receives,I think it simply isn't justified to ever refer to a zoo as a sanctuary. There just isn't the freedom and space of a sanctuary - over 60 acres - or the availability of mud baths and most importantly, other elephants. At her age Duchess would either be a matriarch in the wild or a respected herd member surrounded by other females and their young. Surely it would be more ethical to give her this opportunity since it was ripped away from her when she was taken from the wild as a baby. I can appreciate she I well cared for and have never disputed this, I am merely concerned for her wellbeing not her health.

ha ha i really think this is dreamland . what sanctuaries are you refering please tell me not tes and paws trust me i think duchees is fine where she is . tes and paws are riddled with elephant issues

You're very patronising and there is no need for it. tes and paws are an inspiration and there are plans to build a sanctuary in france for elephants in Europe. There is absolutely nothing that justify that a zoo environment is better than these sanctuaries.

there only an inpiration to people who have very little knowledge of elephants and the gulliable general public

Someone who had knowledge of elephants would understand what their basic needs are. Something you are failing to do - as well as spelling correctly. Females are incredibly social animals, travelling miles every day with their intimate family group. It is within their instincts to be surrounded by other elephants. How you can say that a zoo enclosure and no same species interaction on top of health issues AND the loss of a companion are ideal conditions for an elephant shows the extent of your elephant knowledge.

your putting words in my mouth i never said any of those things whats ideal whats not .just pointing out that the two sanctuaries are not the wonderful fantasy happy elephantasia places the public believe they are .

Okay... well please explain this? Also what elephant issues have Elephant Haven got? They're only in the planning stage and this is the place I recommended for Duchess...

What a superb idea, lets move her straight away, and let her crash around all that space, because she cannot see 100% where she is going because of eyesight problems, atleast at Paignton she knows from memory just where she is in the enclosure,so actually lets just leave her in a place that she knows and feels safe in!!!

You could just talk politely instead of with this patronising attitude. She does have vision so I don't think that would be the case. I just think the loneliness she has and will endure is the worst possible way to end her days?
