Watching the new Chris Packham series, I wonder how possible it would be to build simular underground exhibits at the zoo, convert the tiger exhibit and area around into a British area, Badgers, water vole, rabbits, red squirrels, plus British amphibian species.

Why would you want to get rid of the tiger exhibit though? It's good as it is.

It is, but aren't the tigers moving to the new islands development anyway?

That Chris Packham programme has been fascinating and shown that a subterranean exhibit could be done.

It's not really, though - it's small, has intrusive 360-degree public viewing, and has no real separation enclosure. It's the worst large animal exhibit at Chester by a fair margin. They're breeding, and seem to be doing alright, but it's far from ideal.

And as kiang points out, it is being replaced anyway when Islands opens in 18-24 months. :)

It has been done - at Osnabruck perhaps most notably (and successfully) but also Dresden, and to a degree even the British Wildlife Centre - and not to mention dozens of zoos that have badger sett or fox den windowed viewing, or the cutaway burrows for weasels at Wildwood.

Didn't the original plans for Natural Vision include an area for Cheshire wildlife, which if I remember correctly was going to be centred around the old stable building between the lions and tigers?

news from a visit today

There are now two Lake Aloatran Gentle Lemurs.

The bird rearing aviary contained 13 marbled teal, about 6 garganey and 4-5 ferruginous ducklings.

13 Chilean and 7 Caribbean Flamingo chicks were counted.

A blackbuck has been born.

Chester Zoo has 0.7 bongos, I should know, I counted them. :D

I forgot to post some other news.

Behind the giraffe house where the two male okapis are housed Zoogiraffe and I spotted one of the red forest duikers.

It's a really good thing that Fabi is fine with babies.

It is indeed - that makes the current arrangement much more workable that it could be with a less tolerant dad!

Good news about the duiker - eyes peeled everyone! :D

Apologies if this has already been posted on another Chester thread but the lion cub Tejas who was born here has sired a female cub in Besancon zoo in France.

Sad news.
I was surprised that the Chester Chronicle used one of my photos, after cropping off my copyright claim!
Update - after I complained, I have received an apology.

Alan

Did they pay you? I know a few people who have got proper reproduction fees after that happened.

I made the most of the zoo being open until 7pm today. Lovely to be in the zoo later than usual.
I don't know if I've missed anything on here, but there are now three red pandas. One seemed to be scent marking. Can anyone confirm if that is the new male and if so, where did he come from, how old is he and what's his name?

I only saw two young rock hyrax. Are they the only ones left?

And, I only saw three of the giant otters. Is Xingu OK? The otters and rock hyrax are some of my favourites so I worry if I don't see them all!

Well there was 3 young Cape Rock Hyrax yesterday,so guess 1 was hiding.

As for the Giant Otters if you saw 3 then you saw them all,as the male died awhile back.
