Are any zoochatters going to the annual conference in Kansas City next week? I know of a few and at least one (I assume the Giraffe presentation by David Brown is our own @DavidBrown) that is giving a presentation. I'll be there who else will be?

I will. Hope to see you

Hi Drew, yes, I am part of a panel on giraffe conservation. I look forward to hopefully meeting you and other Zoochatters.

David,

WHY must your presentation be at the same time as one of the very rare Exhibits presentations? Must I choose?

Yeah, that sucks. I want to see the new exhibit presentation too. Maybe we can compare notes after the presentations. With all of the presentations going I guess some scheduling conflict is inevitable.

Just out of curiosity, do many attendees also spend a lot of time visiting local zoos? I saw on the agenda that there are options to tour not only Kansas City Zoo (and its fantastic African zone) but also nearby zoos like Omaha, Blank Park, Topeka and Sunset. I know of some zoo professionals that go for the conference and then tag on a couple of days on either side of the weekend to tour local facilities.

I doubt that many do, but some certainly do. The host zoo is, of course, the focus of much of a day and evening each year. But of the 2100 or so attendees, a number arrive for committee meetings 2 days early, many are on tight budgets, many need to return to the office for September education programs, etc. etc.

I completely agree!

I know of one of those facilities that have about 50-60 people that have signed up to tour the zoo. So not a huge number but a few can take the extra time. Personally being gone for four days means I will have a lot of catchup to do when I get back so taking those extra days just isn't possible this year (of course I have already been to all these zoos so it isn't an issue this year anyway).
