I don't know if anyone is aware of this but I came across a couple of posters in Chipping Norton this morning stating Haythorp zoological Gardens is having an open weekend on the 14th and 15th of September two weeks from now.
Sadly as i have just come back from visiting my partners extended family in the cotswolds today I can't make it personally, but thought others may like to know.

The timing of this event at the same time as Zoohistorica will, i suspect, significantly lower the number of UK zoochatters attending :P

I've always wanted to visit Heythrop but as I currently have more important zoo-related plans then I'll have to give this one a miss! It's all about ZooHistorica baby! ;)

Yes very poor planning on the part of Heythrop,as too my count they will be misssing about 50-60 people that attend every year!As we have all decided that zoohistorica holds more interest this year!

It's a shame but I cannot make Heythrop this year, nor can I make any day of zoohistorica (I have never attended but its on my to do list!)...oh well always next year :(

I'll be doing Zoohistorica on Saturday and Heythrop on Sunday. I know I'm not the only one with that plan.

Poor planning? It's been that weekend for the last two years at least. What is Zoohistorica and where is it being held?

Thanks for tip off, im in that area on that weekend, so is it Heythrop or WMSP????:D

Personally I would go for Heythrop but only because I class WMSP as one of my "locals".

And you say you're in the area, you realise that there is quite a bit of a distance between the two collections right? :p

Yes I know there is a bit of travelling, but I think you are right about Heythorp!!

Will then being going on up to Chester then Chestnut Centre in Derbyshire

whats going on with all the photo in the gallery being deleted? you can see them as small pics at the top on the page but cant open them..........

I haven't visited Heythrop for a while so decided to look at the collection on zootierliste and have some questions:

Bears:
It lists polar bears under 'former holdings', does this mean that Zara has moved/passed away?
It says they have got European brown bear again, is this true, and if so did it replace Zara and is now sharing with Dennis the black bear?

I believe when I visited a while ago they had 6 leopards (3 black, 3 spotted), zootierliste say they are Central African, is that right?

Also cougars are listed under current holdings?

Also had a look at their website- http://www.amazinganimals.co.uk/photo-gallery/amazing-animals/

Thanks

Zara died in June of cancer I believe.

They have 3 brown bear cubs that caused a bit of a uproar in the local paper when they took them to a local fete.

I'm not sure how many leopards they have but in the 3 times I've been they have only had 2 of each on show and 1 of each in the big cat show. They were labelled up as African leopards last year.

I think they may well have a lot of animals offshow so they could well have cougars but I've not seen one on my 3 visits there. If you have seen or ever get to see the episode of A Touch Of Frost which was filmed there they go into the indoor bit where the big cats are kept and it looks to me as if there are quite a few holding areas.

Having visited last weekend, I recently edited the Heythrop listings (they required quite a bit of cleaning up) to reflect my observations and personal correspondence received. As such, the details you note are entirely accurate :)
