ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2013

Also I heard that one of the female African Wild dogs was pregnant and was due to give birth in December 2012 so I was wondering if anyone knew anything.

Having been at the zoo for nigh on 2 weeks during the summer, I can confirm there's no pups at the moment. Shame, especially if there were miscarriages or stillbirths - would be great for me personally, as they're a great species and I've never seen pups before.

I heard from a zookeeper that they would change the mappin terraces into a walk through lemur exhibit. This was given before the gorilla kingdom was built so it might have been changed.

Anyone can confirm this "wild idea" for lemurs on the Mappins?

Any more info on the plans for the Carnivore Terraces?

From what I found out during my course, the lions could well get the area of the old tiger enclosure, doubling (maybe even tripling) their current space. The primates + servals probably won'tleave the area, but will get a refurbishment as well.

Hope this helps :)

When adi is old enough to be separated from gertie he will move to another collection and she will move to the casson. The tapir enclosure will also have a refurb to accomodate the hippos before they move in. A year or so at the least was what I was told.

There was talk about the Mappins being used for Madagascan animals, but I haven't heard about a 'lemur walk through'. The Madagascar idea hinged on the Biota Exhibit opening at Beckton and the Aquarium being transformed into an exhibit for Madagascan animals. The Biota exhibition was never realised.

Other ideas for the Mappins included a gorilla exhbit, an Arctic tundra exhbit and a Chinese experience (red and giant pandas, pheasants etc).

I think for the time being the hippos look good in the old tiger enclosure. They seem much more active (although not being an expert on their behavior I don't know for sure this is a good thing, maybe they aren't relaxed) and the forest look of the enclosure suits them. I do wonder how they'll cope in the winter as I guess there is no indoor pool.

Are the flamingos at Whipsnade clipped too, is this a ZSL wide policy now?

They'd have a big job at Whipsnade if this was attempted. And a few surprises; I can remember seeing Bar-headed Geese flying over Round Close, not a species that usually turns up as a vagrant in South Bedfordshire.

Does someone seriously think that all pinioned birds are suddenly going to be wing-clipped?
If all pinioning of birds stopped today (and I still think it's the best option in some situations), there would still be a few pinioned cranes & flamingos around in fifty years time.

Those were presumably Whipsnade's own birds but there are a surprising number of free-living Bar-headed Geese around. The other day among my local large flock of several hundred Canadas, I counted three individuals.

There's a free flying, apparently ownerless, flock of about 15 in Jersey, and scattered breeding pairs and small groups in England.

On Thursday the zoo reached it's 1 millionth visitor for the year.

They have hit one million already, and still the Autumn season to go including the October half term holiday, one ice cream sold every ten seconds!, no doubt the very good summer weather has contributed to this excellent gate this year, as well as the new tiger tiger exhibit, the best summer season since the early eighties, I'm very pleased for them.

Another reason why I don't care for waterfowl not being kept in aviaries. A rare Nearctic or Siberian duck or goose can never just be seen and marvelled at - hours need to be spent looking for the presence of a ring!

I just saw the post about the Koala birth in Edinburgh. Those who remember him will know how much Frank Wheeler, the Head Keeper of the Clore who passed away in 2006, wanted them back at London. They are exactly the sort of species that the Zoo is lacking.

How can you clip flamingos without injury or injurious, possibly fatal stress?

Easily I guess? Most collections catch them annually anyway, for one reason or another.
