Recent news from Cotswold Wildlife Park
1/The V warty pigs have given birth to a single piglet,now 3 weeks old.
Where did previous 2 piglets go?
2/Sadly the female ground hornbill has died.It was very out of condition
when it arrived.She had been kept in a caravan by previous owners and
lacked alot of her wing feathers.Male looks very lost and kept presenting
to us
3/No sign this sunday of second rhino calf.
4/Car park and grass area practically full on Sunday and zoo choc-a-bloc!
However nice to see zoo so popular.Still some areas quiet!

There is no second rhino calf yet. The female is due any time soon, but not yet as far as I know.
News from Cotswold wildlife Park
1/The male ground hornbill has been moved to Woburn Safari Park.He still
appeared very imprinted.This follows the death of the female who arrived
at the park very out of condition having been kept in a caravan by a
private owner!
2/Two King Vultures are now in this enclosure,they arrived from
Chessington on the 24th August (today).The male is 45 yrs old (!) and
the female is 33yrs old.
3/An Azara's Agouti has been born in the Wall Garden in the cage shared
with the Squirrel monkeys
4/A male dwarf zebu calf has been born.Two new female arrived at the
begining of the year.The other female looks heavily pregnant.
5/A baby camel has recently been born as have numerous meerkats.
6/The chapmans zebra are still confined to quarters and not mixed with
the rhino.Second calf not arrived yet!
7/Ostrich enclosure modified with deeper ditch (?) Will zebra be moved
there -just conjecture!

I asked if they were pure Arabian like the last individual from the first batch, and was informed that they are indeed. I do not know where they were sourced from however.

Great news! As far as I'm aware, unless they came from private keepers there are only two options - either Longleat have shipped theirs out or Sharjah have sent some more over.

Unfortunately our female rhino, Ruby, delivered a stillborn male calf last week. This is a sad event for us all at the Park, particularly the dedicated keepers who were monitoring her closely, however we are sure that she will go on to have breeding success in the future. Meanwhile, Astrid, our 3 month old female calf goes from strength to strength and is proving a real character amongst the other rhino and the keepers

They are indeed on show, managed to see them just but the light was going and the rain was coming down hard.

Asian Lioness, Akela has been PTS this week at the grand old age of 19: Statement from the parks Facebook
Sadly, due to age related problems, we made the difficult decision to put our Asiatic lioness “Akela” to sleep. She was 20 years old which is an extremely good age for a lion and she was one of the oldest of her species in captivity. She had been carefully monitored by our keepers and veterinary team over the past few months and we felt the time was right to prevent any suffering as her condition deteriorated. Akela was born at Helsinki Zoo in 1994 and came to us in August 1996, over the years she proved an excellent mother to 4 cubs, and many of her descendants can be found in zoos around Europe. After the death of her mate, she was joined last year by a young male “Rana” who gave her a new lease of life over the summer. He will now be joined by a young female to form a new pair at the Park and hopefully, these will prove as popular as Akela. She will be sadly missed by staff and visitors alike

new female lion has arrived from Sweden and was on show yesterday in the main enclosure and the male was in the small enclosure to the side.
King Vultures have moved to where the Female hornbill was and that enclosure looked to be having some painting work done ready for something pretty amazing to go on show.
No sign of the anteaters though, probably not helped by the hale storm just before we went to see them.

1/The "old" king vultures enclosure will house a pair of crowned sifaka.
I don't know where the female has come from but it was described
on the announcement as their breeding pair (?) I understood they
previously had three males,with one going to Paris zoo.
2/The lions have now been introduced to one another and appear
to be getting on well.The male was very vocal when he was kept
in the smaller enclosure nearest to the giraffe.
3/The tropical house is vitually encompased by banks of radiators
double height and in some cases four deep (!).This was very ugly
before Xmas ,however some efforts have occured to disguise them
with a new rock/water feature and camouflage and new planting. It
certainly will take some getting used to and I'm amazed nobody has
commented on this!
