Does anybody know the identity of the 2 female ocelots at Marwell Zoo – are they a mother and daughter? According to the official Marwell stock list for 2009, at the beginning of that year there was 1 male and 3 females, but later in the year 1 cat died and 1 went to another zoo, leaving the current 2 females.

And why has the new male hippo arrived when a new mate for Wendy came at the beginning of 2013? Did he die?

...and giraffe calf query!

I saw 11 giraffes at Marwell this May, but only 2 calves. I read on the Marwell Zoo website that 3 calves were born in 2012. Did one of them die and who are the remaining pair?

I believe they are Libby and her daughter Isabella (unless things have changed this year - I don't visit as much as I used to).

I was told in July that the male from Bristol Zoo had recently been returned to them.

Yes, the male calf called Dubaku who was born on 13.10.12 died two months later. The remaining calves are the female Ruby (a Rothschild's giraffe born on 31.01.12 to Irsulah and Casper) and the female Olympia (a hybrid giraffe born on 17.08.12 to Isabella and Kismet).

Thanks for the information. Sorry to hear about the baby giraffe dying - these animals usually do very well at Marwell, don't they? What was wrong with little Dubaku - was he very ill?
