Neat lol, The zoo in whole is awesome!

My favorite time to go to the zoo would have to be on a warm winters day!

My fav animals is hard, i like what ever seems to get me interested!

For me, the most special animals at the zoo are the ones that can only be seen in Toronto ...

1) South African fur seals (only ones in the western hemisphere)
2) Leadbeater's possum (we have one female left; she is off exhibit in the Health Unit, but she is the only one of her kind left in captivity)
3) Dhole (the only ones on display in North America)
4) Chamois (the only ones on display in North America)
5) West Caucasian tur
6) Barbary macaques (the only ones on display in North America)
7) White-headed vulture (one of two in North America)
8) Australian magpie (one of seven in North America)
9) Hairy-nosed wombat (one of seven in North America)
10) Renauld's ground cuckoo (one of two in North America)

The all-time most-special Toronto Zoo animal is "Albert", the only Liberian mongoose ever kept in captivity.

Great list, just one thing.I thought that Parc Safari and The Wilds held dholes from Toronto Zoo's 2006 litter and I though SA Wild Animal Park hoolds them?.The I nver knew about the liberian mongoose.Did he liv ein the old Eurasia Pavilion?

Oops - you are right ZooGoer, there are two other dholes on exhibit in North America - they are at the Peterborough Zoo. These two males, plus one of the females from Toronto are scheduled to move to The Wilds later this year, where they will be on exhibit as well. San Diego HAS dhole, but they are not on exhibit (yet ... the new WAP map does show the old lion enclosure as a future dhole habitat).

As far as I know, the Liberian mongoose lived out most of his life in the IndoMalaya pavilion, in the old water monitor exhibit (now with various tortoises) just past the big fish tank. He really should have been in Africa, but I guess they didn't have an appropriate exhibit.

The dhole are a really rare species in North America though. So its good you put them on your list.

I think they should move the Leadbeater's possum into the austrilasian pavilion. Does the zoo only have one white-headed vulture?

Cool!Just one thing that is somewhat odd is that they have white rhinos and indian rhinos listed in the same paddock at the indian rhino house?Did they live here during the reconstruction of African Savanna?

Yes - all of the savannah animals got shuffled around while the savannah was under construction. Only Bull, the male white rhino, lived in the Indian rhino house. He was kept on the tapir side of the building, and always looked rather sad, slouched in a corner by himself. The two girls (Pistol and Shaboola) lived in the upper elephant house during construction.

Note: I've copied the previous three comments to the history section.

First Time

I will be visiting the Toronto Zoo for the first time in October. We are planning on spending at least a day and a half there. Any advice, helpful hints, or information you Toronto Zoo fans have would be greatly appreciated.

We are aware that a few areas are underconstruction and it will be the 'off season' so a few exhibits will be off limits (rays).

Well, I know if you want to be able to do the whole zoo, and see all the anamals and spend about 5 min at each exhibit then go when the zoo opens in the morning. It will always be your best best regardless. I personally don't think any area should be avoided, what time in October do you think you would be going?

One tip here is that the zoo works in a bit of a circle and go in order Indo-Malaya,Africa,Canadian Domain,Americas,Australasia and Eurasia.

Unfortunately it will be the first weekend of the off-season, when the hours are shortened--October 18 and 19. I do not plan on skipping anything but do realize it is a very large amount of area to cover.
