Chester Zoo Asha given birth.

She may well bring them inside at some point who knows, but hopefully they will go on now to produce a couple more litters

If she goes on rearing them, once they can toddle/walk they may be able to lure them inside, to let the male have an outing.

Was there today , saw Asha pacing around outside the House in the morning . Perhaps she wants Asoka to join her ? Wonder how risky that would be for the cubs . I would not like to think of him being shut inside for a couple of months .

Presumably there is a door open so she can access one of the indoor dens- or not? If she does have access she may decide at some stage to carry the cubs inside of her own accord.

Is there no other cat style paddocks that Asoka could temporarily move into, for example where the cheetahs are? I was thinking, that if Asha doesn't bring the cubs inside soon, then possibly the zoo may need to look at housing Asoka at another zoo for the time being, just so he gets some sort of exercise and time outside. How many cubs has she had anyway?

Apparently she has had 2 cubs or atleast two cubs have been seen. Rehousing Asoka is not possible or I believe so, he will only have to come back in two months and how will they get him into a crate???

As I believe they attached the crate to the doors leading into the paddock and with Asha out there they have no choice. ( I believe this is the only way it can be done, because the tiger house is similar and I have seen them move Kepela in). Its an unfortunite situation that has no real solution, but hey lets look on the postive sign that the fact the Asha is raising these cubs on herself.

Well at least on the positive there are cubs. I wonder when the zoo will make an announcement on the cubs arrival

Once they are passed a month old, with all the bad luck they have had in the last two years with lion cubs they wont want to jinx it. So give it two weeks and am sure they anouce something.

Saying that chester do seem slow sometimes to annouce births.

ive heard that cheetahs and lions dont get on near each other in zoos, can even put them off breeding, im pretty sure i heard this in a zoo talk

There are signs up at the entrance announcing that , because lion cubs have been born , no lions may be on view - also at the Lion Enclosure . I did not look closely but was not aware that any of the doors to the Lion House were open yesterday for Asha to go in .

Has the indoor quarters got more than one den, each with an access door to the outside? If so I'm surprised if one isn't open for her to go in if she chooses, or is she really 'shut' outside?

The lion house has 3 indoor dens, two of which have doors out into the paddock. These are hard to see due the shape of the house and it may well be there was a door open but was hard to see. As they probably given here access to the largest den, the one which is public viewing (but boarded up).

I guess the zoo must be a bit concerned by this development. If Asha has access to the paddock 24-7, there must be a danger that if the weather turns stormy (not unknown in September) and a tree or large branch comes down, the fence could be damaged. I remember from Zoo Days that they have to check it first thing each morning, while the adults would normally be shut in.
I realise this is unlikely, but I hope they have a tranquilliser gun handy to be on the safe side. I suppose that if Asha won't go into the house and the weather turns really bad, endangering the cubs, they might have to tranquillise her anyway. I hope it doesn't come to that.

website

It has been announced on chester zoo website that Asha has given birth. There is only one cub and there is a picture there. Although the picture is not quite clear though!

It was thought she had two, seems we'll have to wait untill someone can ask a member of staff whats going on.

Saw the cub today and mum.

She is being great with her, she brought her out in the morning while she was away from the den. Then later on when the crowds where forming she hid the cub away under the platform she using as a den.

Baby looks healthy and was moving about a little and is now 3 weeks old.

That's great news. When I was there last week all the lions were inside, they must have coaxed her in some how. Did you manage to get any pictures?

So has the cub been officially sexed as a female then? Has there been any info in the keeper talks about when Asoka is going to be introduced. I'm feeling really sorry for the poor lad!
