Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Update Please

For all UK residents, Animal Park has a regular spot on the new UKTV channel, Watch (Sky channel 109). It's on everyday at 3pm (and a repeat at 7pm as well I think).

They'll be repeats I assume...

I've seen the recent episodes too and the one where Kadu died.
Someone said they were really sorry that Kadu died and they felt sorry for Sonar because his old friends were gone. Or they said something along the lines of that. They let the new tigers out in the show pen and Sonar was just sitting looking at them and roaring(do you call it roaring).

PS I've learned how to quote

The new series today proves otherwise - although very sadly all 3 of the old tigers have now passed away. Kaddu was the last of the line, in fact the big cat keepers even mentioned that she had been their only tiger for a few months in between Sonar's death and the arrival of the new girls.

I went to Longleat last week. Here is a very short update.

Lions: 5 females in 1st group, No male in 2nd group either, just 7 females.

Zebra: Baby born Saturday 5th June. Female I think. The 2 other female zebra are also pregnant.

Giraffes: Several pregnant females: babies due between August and November.

Tapirs: 1 female only- Jessie. Male tapir Jethro died in February and the 2 sons left this year.

Oryx and eland babies.

Sea lion babies due very soon.

Work is underway on the new ‘mini safari’.

Shame about Jethro do we know what happend as I didn't think he was that old? :(
There son Hugo from 2007 went to Belgium and Gomez from 2006 is at Cotswold's Wildlife Park

Good news on the giraffe and zebra front! :D The new male's of both species that were bought in last year have clearly done there job

What species are going to be in the mini safari and when are they supposed to be opening it?

Monkey Jungle still closed off to traffic?

Great news about the giraffe and zebra babies as its been a few years since there last ones unlike the sealions who produce at least 2 pups yearly :)

Such a shame about Jethro :(. I was only speaking about him earlier today to another zoochat member saying that i hope there might be a new baby soon as his sons have finally moved on freeing up space again. What are the future plans for her now?

The male in the second group consisting of 7 females was charlie, he was moved to Newquary zoo last year. Suprised to hear that there are only 5 girls in the other group as there was a very large number of them - have some of them been sent to other collections?

Did you hear of any rhino pregnancies?

Thanks.

Charlie was the male in the 1st group that you drive through which currently has 5 females. The 2nd group with 7 females was the pride which was headed by Kabir, before he left, and then his sons.

Monkey Jungle was still shut and is being redesigned as a drive past enclosure only.

I asked a keeper about the tapirs and she said that a new male was lined up and they just had to go and look at him. Forgot to add, 2 mara are also living in the tapir enclosure.

I did not find anything out about the rhinos, who were causing trouble for their keeper who was having to 'be on guard' with the tractor the whole time we were there.

The mini safari which is just the old pets corner area will house the otters, marmosets, and I think anteaters. You could see into the area from the train and the marmoset enclosure was still in place from before, and I think the ground squirrel pen was still there, but other than that I think everything else was flattened and the builders were working when we were there. I guess there will be some other species in there too?

No sign of the otters so I don't know where they have put them whilst they are rebuilding?

Any idea on long term plans and the Masterplan for Longleat?
Most other UK safari parks are currently developing fast-track away from the classical/trad safari park set up and focussing more on endangered species and species/habitat/ecosystem themes? Where does this leave Longleat?

Sorry, my bad, i get confussed with the prides. I remember charlies pride used to have 5/6 girls so have some died?

- Do you know how old Jethro was and what his cause of death is?
- Also, how many giraffes are pregnant - is Imogen one of them?

Thanks:)

Dunno about masterplans, but Lord Bath's son is taking over and already has his own ideas for Longleat's future. As long as he brings back the elephants and doctor who exhibition I'm happy. ;)

You didn't get any information on where they re-housed Kabir's three remaining sons?
