Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2013

Also from facebook someone said keepers are calling her Ellie because she was born on the same day the elephants left. I dont know if it is true first of all because well its facebook. But if it is true Ellie isnt a bad name for her given the fact she probably became a beacon of hope for the keepers after such a sad day and that she will one day inhabit the exhibit the elephants did... if shes even ours. Since Stripes was from Cleveland she might belong to them.

The Chinese Giant Salamander is now on exhibit in the Panda Interpretive Centre.

When I went to the zoo yesterday, I only managed to get a glimpse of it, but it was hiding behind a rock, so I didn't get a look at exactly how big it is. One of the keepers told me it's 4 feet long.

In other news, the 2 male tawny lions are back on rotation. The keeper was telling me that they'll be out on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The white lions will be out on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It's been a couple years since I last saw these guys, and they are huge. The biggest (no mane) one weighs as much as all 3 white lions together. His head alone looks double the size of the male white lion.

I'm so excited that the giant salamander is finally on exhibit! The old lions being back on exhibit is good news too. It's been a while since I last saw them.

Now I really want to go to the zoo, but I would like wait until the baby giraffe goes on exhibit. Does anyone know when that will be?

That is an interesting rotation. I'm surprised that the Lindy and Jerroh get 4 days (with 3 in a row) and the white lions only get 3, seeing as how the white lions are a featured animal. Last year, each group of lions spent half the day on exhibit, with a switch happening at noon. If this set-up didn't work, why not just do every other day.

Maybe they are switching the rotation for the off season to give Lindy and Jerroh more time outside while keeping the white lions who might not be fully acclimatized to our cold winters some much needed inside time. During the summer everyone wants to see Fintan, Makali and Lemon but in the winter with next to no one there people will be happy to see any animal in the african section out and about. Perfect time for Lindy and Jerroh to be out. Another possiblity... though Im thinking fairly remote given their age and space available at the zoo... is breeding. They might want Makali and/or Lemon to go off birth control to see what happens. They will be 3 in the spring and in the wild they would be having their first litter. Fintan is a little young though for breeding as males usually dont get to breed in the wild until 5 or so but anything is possible. A pregnancy soon with one would get cubs by February.. ish. And 3 month old cubs on exhibit would occur in May or June. Perfect timing. Just like I believe they must be working on getting Kemala and Hari together over at the Sumatran tiger exhibit. Just good timing to try for cubs if any would come in heat right now. Im just spitballing ideas though...

Oh Cypher the bigger maneless male is Jerroh. Lindy is the one with a light mane. Just to help you identify them more easily. And I think when it comes to the white lions well Fintan is easy with his starter mane... cant wait til thats fully in. But with Lemon and Makali I believe Lemon is the one with more pigment in her fur... A little more yellow than Makali. I could be wrong though. Someone will surely correct me if I have it wrong.

My response about the half day rotation was what happened last winter, so the white lions have experienced a full winter. During the warmer weather, Lindy and Jerroh spend all night outside (7pm-7am), so all the lions have been spending equal time outside for 1 and a half years- and this is why I think the rotation that cypher mentioned is strange, especially with Lindy and Jerroh out 3 days in a row.

Thanks. I was wondering what all their names were.

No problem Cypher. Happy to help. If your ever wondering how to identify one animal from another in any exhibit you can always ask the rest of us. Usually someone can come up with an answer that will help, particularly with the mammals and birds who are easier to tell apart than reptiles or amphibians with names. Every little trick each of us can learn helps all of us in the end. Never hestitate to ask.

Baby Giraffe

Went to the zoo today. Not much was really going on while I was there, but they were allowing viewing of the giraffes at the giraffe house. Got a chance to see the baby giraffe out and walking with her mother. She seemed somewhat wary of everyone, but her mom kept her calm and secure.

That's great news! I should be visiting the zoo in the next few weeks to see the baby giraffe and chinese giant salamander.

Oh man just my luck. I was down in Toronto today but couldnt go to the zoo... stupid family stuff... Odds are Im stuck waiting for spring again. Ugh.

Glad you got to see her Cypher.

According to the zoo's Facebook, the baby giraffe's name is Mstari. If this is true, I'm kind of surprised that the zoo didn't have a naming contest for her. The Facebook page also has tons of adorable pictures of her.

EDIT: I found out the baby's name is indeed Mstari. It means "Stripes" in Swahili. I think that's a great choice of a name since Stripes was one of my favourite animals ever at the zoo.

I believe she was named by the keepers, which, seeing as how she was born the same day the elephants left, was probably an attempt to boost morale. I had heard a rumour that she was going to be named Ellie, but I think Mstari is a fitting name.

I was just on the zoo's website and it says that red pandas are temporarily on display in the Malayan Woods. I'm guessing the zoo will be keeping them there until they find a replacement for the clouded leopard.

Awesome. I haven't seen them in years. I hope to get some pictures of them.

I did happen to see one red panda in the old clouded leopard enclosure earlier today. I have to admit, it was sad to see all of the signage removed that was related to clouded leopards. The red panda was quite active at the time.

That enclosure is pretty tricky as far as decent photography goes though.

Today I made a last minute decision to go to the zoo and I had an amazing time. Here are some updates:

- I finally got to see the the giant salamander exhibit and I was pretty disappointed. It looked nothing like the salamander's natural habitat and the salamander was extremely hard to see.
- Mstari was adorable. I posted a few pictures of her in the gallery.
- I saw three raccoons on exhibit today. I always thought there were only two.
- A hingeback tortoise is on display in the land area in the Nile softshell turtle exhibit.
- There were very small baby veiled chameleons in the chameleon nursery.
- A Hamilton's pond turtle was on exhibit with the Malaysian painted turtles.

Some other highlights of my day were watching the raccoons and grizzly bears actually move, finally getting a good look at the baby moose, and seeing the red pandas again.
