Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo & Aquarium

This years baby Angolan Colobus escaped yesterday by simply going through the mesh! We got her back after an hour but everyone including the four other Colobus were worried!

Animal Death

I'm sad to report that Lucky, a six month old baby pronghorn, died a fews days ago. Him and his brother Bullet were born on June 2 at the Lee Richardson Zoo. They were sent to us in late June as part of our successful pronghorn surrogacy program. Lucky suffered a broken leg about two months ago and his death is being attributed to that. Bullet however in good health and is almost ready to be acclimatized into our adult herd. I'll know more tomorrow.:(

drills at Columbus.

Do you know when the two female Drills are due to be shipped to Edinburgh, UK.?

1) Phoebe is due in late February / March. We predicted this because Bodhi and George (her first calf in Ontario) were 21.5 months, unfortunately on the longer end of the spectrum. She is doing excellent and you actually now tell that she is pregnant now.

2) I haven't heard any updates on the drills. They said it would probably be a year because international shipping animals these days isn't what it once was. So my guess is that they will be leaving in Summer of 09 but again I'm not 100%.

Animal Birth!

On the morning of November 20 the okapi keepers arrived to the sight of hooves sticking out of Miliki, our once pregnant okapi. She successfully gave birth. This is her first calf so we were a little worried, but her maternal instinct kicked right in and mom and baby are resting undisturbed in the okapi barn. This is Columbus' second calf, the first being Manala born to Sefini a few years ago. If anyone comes to the zoo in the spring be sure to check out the second okapi yard for the baby and mom!

Good to hear one of my girls has a calf! If she is anything like her mama, she'll be very maternal...San Diego females are known for this.

General Update

1) Coco - He has been on exhibit multiple times and is doing great. You can barely even tell an "accident" happened. The wound is almost completely healed and he is off antibiotics.

2) Tiger - We have sent one of our females, Anya, to the Minnesota Zoo in hopes she will breed there. Fortunately that is the headquarters of the SSP which makes that more likely and I do not believe she is related to any of their tigers.

3) Tree Kangaroo - We will be shipping our male Matschie's Tree Kangaroo (AJ) to the Detroit Zoo where he will hopefully breed with their young female. He has been here with our female for many years and to prevent the species from going extinct in captivity we need more babies. We will be receiving an older male from Minnesota to replace him.

4) Red River Hogs - Our hogs will be moving to the Binder Park Zoo. We have been given a breeding recommendation from the SSP (or PMP?) and we will be receiving a young female from Cincinnati and a young male from San Diego.

5) Okapi - The baby and mother are doing well. Fun Fact: Our first okapi calf, Manala is actually pregnant in Dallas and is expecting in December.

Their calling on every elephant holding zoo to do so...I've seen the same article several times with a different zoo name in each one. I think they want the zoo to make a statement by politically banning the use of ankus.

Does anyone know how Cleveland Zoo's African Elephants are doing down in Columbus. They arrived in August and neither Cleveland nor Columbus have posted any updates. ColumbusZoo001 do you know how Cleveland's trio is doing or any information regarding them?

i was wondering the same thing.

The African girls are doing excellent. Until now they have only had access to our 8,000 square foot south side yard. We are working on getting them used to Asian elephants presence because to get to the Community Room and the North Yard they will have to walk by the Asians. I'll post some pictures tomorrow of them in the South Side yard.

Animal Update

For the past few months we were convinced both our elephants were pregnant. Connie, our other female elephant, is not pregnant. Her window for pregnancy is closing fast, if hasn't already closed because she is 36. We will try a few more times but as she ages it becomes more and more dangerous. Phoebe is in great condition, just two or three more months to go!

For those who haven't noticed I have been posting some of my pictures of the zoo in the gallery. I've already displayed some North America and Pachyderm photos but there are still plenty more, keep checking daily. My objective is to provide a more in depth look at our exhibits and animals. Thanks to snowleopard and okapikpr and others the gallery is already huge, but I want to portray the zoo from an regular visitor/volunteer/worker, not just a visitor. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to comment on this thread or private message me!

Happy New Year!
