Red River Hogs as mixed exhibits.

Jersey wanted pygmy hogs in the 1970's but they had to be quarantined first in another European country. They did not have much success and they were left with an all male group and the import never went ahead. I think the quarantine was carried out by Zurich.

I know get why they have had so little Hoofstock, Thanks Bongorob.

Colombus is keeping them together with bonobos, Saint Louis with bat eared foxes, Salzburg with white collared magabeys.

Thankyou. This is proving very interesting- it seems RR Hogs are being kept with quite a wide variety of other species, large & small, at different zoos.

It was. I believe they were kept in a greenhouse. None ever reached Jersey.

It does make chesters planned mixed exhibit look tame thou! :)

At least they are trying mixed exhibits, it makes it more enriching for the occupants & more enjoyable to watch.

Banded Mongoose with Warthog???

Actually, we tend(automatically?) to assume mixed exhibits are most impressive using larger species e.g. Red River Hog & Congo Buffalo for example. But maybe Chester's idea of Mongooses and Pigs is a good one- Mongooses are pretty active- so may prove more interesting as an exhibit than with a larger less active species(like Buffalo) and the exhibit can also be done in a relatively smaller enclosure too.

I was on about your post that it would be the smallest mammal mixed that chester have done refering to the RR hogs & Yellow mongoose.

I argee that Warthog & Mongoose exhibit is nice to watch esp. if the mongooses are out and about.

san diego zoo have them with a western forest hog, congo buffalo, allem's swamp monkey. campbell's guenon and spot necked otter in one exhibit.

I didn't think that the pig/mongoose exhibit was a new idea, though I am not sure where I may have heard of it. I believe there are some connections with the Lion King movie...

I'm presuming they don't think it will work just on the basis of a cartoon film!!

Congo Gorilla Forest at the Bronx Zoo contains a splendid habitat with red river hogs, mandrills, Wolf's guenons and DeBrazza monkeys.

From the 'Gorillas & Cheetahs' thread at Bronx Zoo; there is mention of Mandrill aggression to a Hog, and either the Mandrills or De Brazza monkeys possibly having been moved...so perhaps not all are in peaceful coexistence?

At Chester it's more of a case of finding something that can stand up to the hogs.

Great document okapikpr! Red river hogs in with 16 bonobos at the Columbus Zoo? There were of course some discrepancies, but overall it made for interesting reading.
