Another Type of Zoo

Would it make sense for me to post a aquarium idea or a prehistoric/extinct animal-comprised zoo, instead of just a normal zoo?

Quote: Norwegian Moose, you should try making a completely indoor zoo.

I have had diffuculties with my computer, and I have been unable to go on the internet for the past days, so thats the reason I have not posted anything yet. I am also going on vacation tomorrow, and will be gone for a few days. But I will post more again when the technical problems have been sorted up correctly, and I have time to do it.

Ah, how I've missed this thread. I myself have nothing to post here at the moment, having done basically nothing zoo-related in several months, but rereading some of the ideas from past years is definitely refreshing - it gets me in a zoo-designing mood. Haha.

I'm honestly not sure if I'll throw any ideas up here ever again (or at least anytime soon). I hate to say it, but the Anaheim Zoo is nearly defunct, and any small plans I had for that zoo in Orlando were short-lived. School was eating up most of my time, and I never found the inspiration to get back to my ideas. Now that doesn't mean I'm abandoning them entirely; I just find it more satisfying to be able to design realistically, even if the plans will never become reality. So, in the meantime, I think that it's in my best interest to become more active with animals/nature (by volunteering, reading more, researching more, etc). This will surely benefit me, and, possibly, my future plans, because I will be able to create more detailed, realistic designs whenever an idea comes to mind - unlike before, where I struggled to finish plans simply because I didn't have enough knowledge on the subject. Of course, I could always post ideas that aren't so detailed/fully thought-out, like I have in the past, but again, it's just much more satisfying to put a lot of work into one well-thought out exhibit that could one day really function in a zoo.

I hope you don't mind me saying this, as this is pretty much me saying I'm leaving the thread. But of course, I'll always stop by and snoop around, commenting on peoples' ideas (although this post here will be the first in two months) here and there. I've grown too attached to "Design a Zoo" to completely ignore it.

A new zoo for Las Vegas, NV

Hello all! I am so excited I have finally found this forum!

I have an idea for a new zoo in Las Vegas, NV.

This new zoo has some interesting characteristics that will make it super successful and responsive to its location.

This zoo will be cutting edge in sustainability and local responsiveness as a facility, and for the animals and visitors alike.

Three main supporting design and programming concepts are as follows:

-Programming the collection in a way that is suitable for sustained periods of very hot weather
-Being a leader in water conservation and programming, considering Las Vegas's dry location and the impetus for increased conservation measures everywhere.
-Energy conservation and designing facilities and exhibits in a way that controls the amount of energy used.

This means that the zoo will primarily house a dry, hot desert collection, with animal and plant species that will thrive in those conditions.

Other supporting concepts include:

-Responsiveness to the local culture and urban context of the site.
-Vernacular and green architecture
-Capitalising on the unique market of Las Vegas to maximise visitation opportunities. This may include attractions/exhibits that are open late or overnight.

The zoo will be located on a 41 acre site, 2 blocks off of the Strip in Paradise, Nevada.

The zoo is composed of several different sections:

The Entrance Retail Plaza and surrounding Education Buildings.
The Wildlife Conservation Center and Conference Building.
Administrative Offices at the perimeter of the site facing the street.

and the following exhibit areas:

The Great Southwest
African Expedition
Sands of the North
Outback
Asian Adventure
Desert Travelers
The Oasis
The Herpetarium
The Nighthouse

Maps and Images along with exhibit explanations to follow!

Las Vegas Zoo-The Great Southwest

Here is an overview of the first major exhibit area in the new Las Vegas zoo; The Great Southwest!

Upon leaving the entrance plaza, guests will walk down a short, xeriscaped trail with rock formations and local plantings of desert plants native to the Las Vegas area. The arrival to The Great Southwest will be a stone walkway over a dry creek bed. This will lead into a small plaza with infographics and signs educating visitors about the 4 great deserts of Southwestern North America. They are then informed that the trail through this area will take them on a journey through the 4 deserts. Signs and change in paving/path material will help guide guests when they transition from one desert to the next. This will be a common theme throughout the zoo.

1. Baja California Desert-
The trail will enter a building that is home to small mammals, reptiles and birds of the Baja. This exhibit will be backed by a large California Condor and Black Vulture Exhibit with flight nets adjacent to the trail in a canyonlike atmosphere. The trail will continue with two paddocks on either side of the trail, one for Peninsular Mule Deer and the other for Baja Pronghorn Antelope. After that will be a small grotto for Ring Tailed Cat and a walk-though aviary with some small rodents and free flight birds. The trail will continue on to one of the only water intensive areas in the zoo, a small aquarium with species from the Gulf of California, as well as tanks for California Sea Lions and Guadalupe Fur Seals.

2. After this the trail exits Baja and enters Mohave Desert, which is represented by a large glass pavilion with free flight birds and exhibit areas for reptiles, arthropods and small mammals.

3. After exiting the Mohave Pavilion, guest will follow the trail to the Sonoran Desert area. This exhibit is notable for its carnivore exhibits which use glass pane design to bring the carnivores up close and face to face with guests. The Sonoran Exhibit opens up with this string of glass-pane exhibits including those for American Black Bear, Mexican Wolf, Jaguar, Ocelot and Coatis. Grottoes for Thick Billed Parrots and Hog nosed follow, and after that paddocks for Coues Deer and Antelope Jackrabbits, and Desert Bighorns. The richest walkthrough Aviary in the zoo and another reptile building follow after that.

4. The Great Southwest comes to a close with the Chihuahua Desert. A mixture of grottoes and glass pane exhibits hold smaller carnivores, with paddocks for burros, mustangs and deer. An interactive glass pane exhibit with Collared Peccary is interspersed with flight nets for raptors, ravens and turkeys. The final pavilion includes reptile tanks and freeflight birds.

Las Vegas Zoo-African Expedition

Hello again!

Phase 2 of the Las Vegas zoo is ready to be announced. Welcome to African Expedition!

1. Guests will find themselves in the center of a simulated Khoisan Village with free-walking Helmeted Guinea Fowl and small paddocks for Kori Bustards between service buildings. Signage and infographics inform visitors that they will experience 3 southern African Deserts, the great Kalahari, Karoo and Namib deserts.

2. The trail will lead them through a free flight aviary with desert birds from Southern Africa and then on through a walk-through (animals will be separated) vulture and raptor roost. Beyond this will be a catwalk with several glass pane exhibits interspersed with open air viewing platforms for lions, leopards and other carnivores of the Kalahari. The trail will turn and pass large paddocks on either side, one for Chapman's Zebras and Springboks, the other for Gemsbok. Continuing on there will be a large paddock for 3 Black Rhinos and across from them, several large paddocks for African Elephants. On the back side of the paddocks will be the Elephant Building, which also has small viewing areas for different reptiles and mongoose.

3. The trail will transition to red dry clay path and visitors will enter the Karoo. Large paddocks for Ostrich and Mountain Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest and Cheetahs will be interspersed with exhibits for Servals, Caracals an Chacma Baboons. The crowning achievement here would be a walk-over bridge over a cleverly designed Cape Buffalo and White Rhino paddock. The animals are separated, but intertwined with viewing areas.

4. Finally, African Expedition comes to a close with a builsing simulated to look like an impressive sand dune, with misters blowing a cool "fog" over guests as they enter. The building is noticeably cooler, and we are able to view smaller species from the coastal Namib desert, including an interactive Dung Beetle exhibit brought up to eye level for adults and children.

I like your exhibits! Is your Asian themed area going to include Middle Eastern wildlife? I always think that area gets overlooked.

My zoo

This zoo will be suited in Western Europe, preferably in France or Germany.
This is how my zoo will be set up. The zoo will mostly be divided taxonomically. The entrance you walk in to get in to the zoo, will be formed like a gate, very similar to the entrance in Berlin Zoo. The first things you will see inside the zoo, will be a couple of fountains, sculptures and flowerbeds. You will also see the large restaurant, gift shop, and the aquarium that will be the first animal exhibit complex in the zoo.

The aquarium:
Saltwater fish, corrals and sponges floor:
The aquarium will have five floors. The first floor will house the saltwater fishes, corrals and sponges. The saltwater section will have three themes. The first theme will hold the fishes that is living outside Scandinavia. The second theme will have all the corral reef fishes, corrals and sponges. My Zoo

These Are The Exhibits I Would Have:

Jungle Trek: An African Jungle with gorillas, okapis, leopards, red river hogs etc.

Layers Of The Rainforest: The building would be in the shape of a tree. Each floor would represent each different layer of the rainforest in South America such as the forest floor with Jaguars and Tapirs or the canopy with different types of birds. each time you would go up stairs to the higher level and then go back down viewing different animals.

Whats The Difference: It would have animals people often confuse with each other in side-by-side exhibits such as frogs and toads or crocodiles and alligators with informative signs telling what the difference is.

Unknown Animal Building: This would have animals the general public have probably never heard of. On each informative sign there would be a question asking "have you heard of this animals" with a yes and no button. on the side there would be a percentage statistic showing how many people knew the animal and how many didn't which would change overtime as people pressed the buttons. Animals here would include axolotls, jaguarandis, tarsiers and more.

I would have several other exhibits but those are some of my favorites from the paper I wrote about the subject.

I like the rainforest idea. The layers is a neat approach. Where would this zoo be located?

I'm not sure...probably in a small suburban lesser-known town. Growing up in a small town I always wished I could have a big zoo like the one in the Bronx near me. It would give people with an unexciting town something special.

It'd be almost impossible to build a big zoo in a small town as it would be a lot less visitation and thus less income and funding. When things get rough or you want to make an expansion don't expect the town or county's government to help you out.
