I've put this here rather than the T.V section as its more for UK forumsters who might miss it otherwise.

Last night I watched the first half of an ITV drama about the mystery of Lord Lucan and his disappearance. Naturally his close association with John Aspinall was featured, and there were several scenes at 'Howletts' with Mr A. in with a Gorilla (a man in a Gorilla suit) and one with Tigers in the background.

It wasn't the real Howletts, so did anyone recognise the Zoo they used for this? It didn't seem like anywhere I know. There was a White Tiger in one shot, so was it Paradise Park in Herts perhaps?

It was all shot at Jim Clubbs place (Heythrop)-Aspers didn't have Gorillas behind glass at Howletts of course.

I thought the actor playing "Aspers" depicted his character John Aspinall very well, and it was mildly interesting, the let down was indeed the fake Gorilla which was very obvious (to zoo-chatters at least!) , though nothing against Heythrop of course.

They didn't make his appearance quite flambouyant enough though, no Regency sideburns or collar length hair that gave rise to his nickname in certain circles...'the Buck' (from the Regency expression).;)

And ive got to say that ,whilst I appreciate that he may have been quite different with his chums,he was probably the most pompous and obnoxious person ive ever met-he seems too nice in the programme almost. The final episode could be interesting because the author of the book upon which the prog, is based theorizes that Aspinall and Goldsmith had Lucan done away with after smuggling him out of the country lest he be captured and forced to reveal in court the goings-on at the Claremont.

I'm so glad you lot agree it was a bloke in a gorilla suit. I said it was fake, and a poor fake at that, my OH insisted it was a real gorilla! – nice for me to have some back up.

I met him twice,- the second time I spent a day as a 'guest' with him. I certainly wasn't one of his chums and though I was rather expecting him to be similar to what you describe, I actually found him amusing and quite charming- maybe we just 'got on', I don't know, but I revised my concept of him somewhat after that.

One theory/rumour is that LL's body was fed to the Howletts Tigers as a way of disposing of him.;)

I thought the 'Gorilla man' acted okay given it was only for a few short shots...
