Yep, completely forgot to mention the fawn - it was very visible and active yesterday. Good to see the collection is managing to keep numbers hanging on after the knife-edge the deer seemed to be on not long ago :)

New baby saki seen today. I don't remember them having bred this species before, is it a first for them?

Phillipine Deer- what is their current status at Chester now? Is it still 1.2(mother and female fawn born after the previous buck died)+ this recent birth (total 4 animals). Or did they bring in any more?

And has the new fawn been sexed yet?

I saw 1.2.1 on Saturday, but I seem to recall the old female died a while ago so this would suggest at least one new female has been brought in - possibly more if I did not see all the individuals held by the collection.

1.1 have been imported this year.

Meaning 1.3.1 .. = 5!

Total depends on if the older female died (giving 2 females now) and whether just one, or two different males have been imported since the father of the previous female fawn, which died before it was born.

A group of us have been trying to isolate which is which for a while now and we think that the young male BAKARI has more angular tear marks around the muzzle, is lighter and larger than his sister SAFI who has much more curved tear marks around the muzzle and is obviously darker furred and a little bit less adventurous too.

Still trying to identify the new cichlids in Spirit of the Jaguar. Anyone know what they are?

Excellent thanks ,thought you would know:)
Just had a look through my pictures can see what you mean:)

Maybe if they are successful they may be able to have some onshow in the future to better highlight the conservation efforts.
I very much doubt that the Scottish Wild cats will ever go on-show at Chester, given that when they arrive they are going to be breeding them to released into the wild,so the release program will not want any animals not are used to being around people!

True, but there will be retired breeding animals at some point. Would be nice to see some on show eventually.

If a Zoo is to become a breeding centre for Scottish Wild Cat and they are kept off-show, why not set up some cameras ahead of their arrival to let visitors see them? They could even set up an information kiosk/hut with tellies and signage showing the cats and telling their story and why they are there, breeding, reintroduction, etc.
