Comparison of zoos

The Kansas City Zoo has one of the best Africa exhibits of any zoo that I've been to. They arguably have the best chimpanzee exhibit in the world. The new penguin exhibit looks very cool, although it didn't yet have penguins in it when I toured it.

The Sedwick County Zoo in Wichita has underwater hippo viewing and a stellar reputation.

You don't have an easy choice. If you like African animals and penguins though, I would think that Kansas City may be what you want.

Have to choose between Kansas City and Wichita zoos. Any thoughts?

Touch choice! Between 2008 and 2012 I visited 90 of America's 97 best zoos (according to the book "America's Best Zoos") and I'd place Sedgwick County in my top 8 and Kansas City in my top 20. Kansas City has an enormous, world-class African zone, a decent entrance area with popular animals (polar bears, penguins and river otters) and an above-average Australian section offset by a poor Asian area. Sedgwick County is consistently excellent with a little bit of everything: large North American, Australian, African and South American sections; a decent reptile house; great apes (chimps, gorillas, orangutans); penguins; a tropical house; a terrific children's barnyard zone; and very few disappointing enclosures. Both are top-notch zoos and they are only a few hours away from a pair of top 5 zoos: Omaha & Saint Louis.
