Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Sumatran Rhinos at Cincinnati Zoo

Yeah I was thinking, San Diego's former Sumatran rhino exhibit will soon be vacated of tapirs and capybaras...

At San Diego, the old Okapi exhibit might be more suitable (has more shade, and a little more secluded)....by the way what species currently lives in that enclosure?

That's true, I had fegoten about that. I'm sure that San Diego will be a big candidate knowing that they will have that exhibit opened. Even though I still think that LA should get Harry.:D

Part of the Tiger river exhibit at San Diego zoo was designed for a pair of Sumatran rhinos when it was first built, Sumatran Tigers, Tapirs and Sumatran rhinos were going to be the star species of this exhibit

Does anybody know what happened to that old sumatran rhino exhibit? Is it currently being used by another animal?

I am sure it is being used by another species, when San Diego had a female Sumatran rhino at the zoo it was placed in the old (Northern, I think) White rhino exhibit, From what I can remeber she was later sent to another zoo on the eastern side of the US

San Diego Zoo has had four (2.2) Sumatran Rhinos in its collection:

Barakas F arrived Nov 1988, died Feb 1995
Ipuh M arrived Apr 1991, transferred to Cincinnati Oct 1991
Rami F arrived Nov 1991, died May 1992
Tanjung M arrived Aug 1992, died Feb 1995

Wow, by the looks of it Sumatrans have a hard time surviving in zoos. Do you know how many Sumatran Rhinos has LA had? Is it only Emi and Andalas?

Wow, great list! How do they decide what rhino belongs to who when they are born at Cincy? Like Andalas and Harry belong to LA, but Suci belongs Cincy.

Standard breeding loan agreement....1st born goes to one zoo, the 2nd goes to the next, 3rd goes to the one zoo, 4th to the next, etc. In this case the "odd" births belong to Los Angeles; and the even to Cincinnati.

The current Baird's tapir/capybara exhibit is where I saw (and got peed on) by a Sumatran rhino in the mid 90's. I believe the former okapi exhibit has met a bulldozer at the hands of Elephant Odyssey.

Okapikpr, if you were talking about the old okapi exhibit across from the veldt, it is certainly gone as per the most recent google map. (After the okapi were moved, I know bongo and then yellow-backed duiker were housed here).

Regarding Tiger River, is the current tapir exhibit actually two exhibits? (I can't think of another space that might house rhinos). In order to get from one "lobe" to the other, the tapirs have to walk around the back of the central 'mudbank' ... I suspect there may have originally been a gate (... and may still be one?) between the two halves. However, if they currently have that capability, I would have thought they would have the gate closed to get more of their tapirs on exhibit and out of holding.

Are these rhinos actually owned by these zoos, rather than a blanket overall ownership by the Malaysian government or whomsoever in their country of origin?

(If 'Suci' is Cinci's then I'm sure she will stay where she is...)

So did L.A. relinquish 'Andalas' for repatriation, rather than Cincinnati?

Actually, the rhinos are all still 'owned' by "The Directorate General of Forest Protection & Nature Conservation, Ministry of Forestry, Republic of Indonesia", and Emi and Ipuh were originally acquired as "loan ins". Andalas' move back to Indonesia is recorded as "return to owner".

That's what I thought... So the movements within the USA zoos of the calves on the basis of 'ownership' (1,2,3 etc) etc are really only temporary and overall subject to dictates from Indonesia ?
