For the past 3 months I have been working in the program Paint to construct my first three dimensional zoo in which I intend on sharing with all of you. This is not another 'Design a Zoo' or 'Design an Exhibit' thread but this merely is just an individual thread to show my works. My first piece of course, represents all of the Cincinnati Zoo, and I will continue to do this for all of the zoos I have visited. As you can see many of the animals on the map have been taken from the San Diego Zoo maps after it caught my attention that both zoos share many of the same species. In order to see the species list and the map at the same time I would recommend you open the map up in another tab. It is not revealed what exactly is in the categories such as 'Game Birds', or 'Song Birds', so just ask me or use the zoo's website. After sometime, I will change each area of the Cincy Zoo's map to the point in time in which that certain exhibit was most significant. Whether or not each area will represent different time zones. Here are some notes and facts about the map....

-I started the map on October 29th and ended on January 8, 2014 (71 days total with many days without work).
-I started with the Sumatran Rhino in Wildlife Canyon, worked my way around in a circle, and finished with the words 'Swan Lake'.
-The Buff-cheeked Gibbon (Gibbon Islands) is a disguised male White-cheeked Gibbon.
-The White Tiger was left out in Cat Canyon to save room
-The Eland in Rhino Reserve is supposed to be a Bongo. There may also no longer actually be Crowned Cranes in with them.
-The Discovery Forest is exactly where it needs to be but in reality it is directly behind the cow elephant exhibit.
-The Burrowing Owl in Wolf Woods is supposed to be a Barred Owl but I didn’t see the need to edit it. Same goes for the White Lions.
-The Okapis (Rhino Reserve) share an exhibit with duikers.
-The Mueller's Gibbon in Jungle Trails is a Siamang
-The Angolan Colobus was supposed to be a Coquerel's Sifaka but I failed to find a graphic that met my needs. Luckily though the colobus is still displayed during colder weather.
-I poorly disguised the Sun Bear as a Black Bear (Lords of the Arctic)
-The ratio between Rhino Reserve to Lords of the Arctic to Jungle Trails to Sea Lions to Wolf Woods to the Children's Zoo is nearly perfect
-It is already known what will go into the top three, smaller Africa exhibits but it is unknown what exactly will go into the large savanna so I find no point in adding any of the animals. I will edit the map as these areas open.

Very impressive. The zoo map you get at Cincinnati Zoo isn't 3D already? If not, maybe you can share it with them.

Now the next challenge might be to indicate the topography. These are interesting sites and the 3D approach makes great sense for them.... unless the image makes the site appear flat ;)

The grey parts represent a path. I did think about adding vegetation, mainly bushes, but I don't have the skills to really do such a thing. I added perimeters on the first Cincy Zoo map (that I never finished and llooks unattractive compared to this one) but all they seemed to do was ruin the map. Without fences it makws the map simpler and easier to read. I'll post the map once I get I get on my computer.

I did want to post this on the zoo's thread but I was afraid I would get criticism for it since this really has nothing to do with 'zoo news'.

With all these suggestions and with nothing else to do, I would actually be happy to fulfill them.

cool stuff, Moebelle. Some of the pathways are larger than in real-life, but that is fine. Topography would be a great addition. Would allow people to really understand the Canyon/Eeyrie area.

Without a doubt you're right. The path between the African Cafe (next to the large Africa Savanna) and the Gibbon Islands is about three times the size of what it is. I would make the cliff on Eagle Eyrie more noticeable but it could get in the way of me drawing the Reptile House. I will try my best though:)

I am creating a whole new map but this time with much more detail and I have one question for all: Should I add graphics of the animals within the area or should I just replace them with words?
 
This looks great Moebelle, certainly looks like a very professional, real zoo map. Admittedly Rhino Reserve looks very similar to SDZ's Urban Jungle...:D

Also, I think what nanoboy meant by 'perimeter' was an outside perimeter of the zoo, rather than individual enclosures. Maybe if you put the zoo boundary in, and vegetated/put in whatever is actually surrounding the zoo in, that might help give the impression of topography you are after.

I'm sure it would be fine to post in the US forum as a standalone thread tagged to the Cincinnati Zoo. Alternatively, I wouldn't have a problem with it being posted in the General Zoo Discussion forum, as in many ways it could become a more general discussion about zoo maps, without a specific US focus. It doesn't really belong in the Zoo Café, which is supposed to be for non-zoo-related discussion. Let me know if you would like it moved.

Haha I once thought the same thing, I think the Indian rhino has something to do with it:)

Yeah, I just had a look at the SDZ map, and really the only thing similar is the rhino, so it must have been that!

Just to confirm, do you want it moved to the General Zoo Discussion or US forum?

2014 Cincinnati Zoo Map

Here is the new and improved Cincinnati Zoo 2014 map. I was going to wait to post this until May or after the opening of Africa's Phase 4 exhibits since the species list isn't 100% known yet but I just said ''What the heck, if I'm wrong, I can edit it''. There's a strong chance the zoo will not get a Kori Bustard if you ask me. I improved the map by adding more shadows, a barrier, trees, more animals, and replaced some of them with better ones. Can you find the 40+ individual edits I made to the map?
