Dartmoor Zoo First Visit to Dartmoor Zoo

I finally visited the Zoo for the first time today. I'd been put off by the many mixed reviews on trip advisor, but I decided to give it a visit to see for myself.

I did enjoy myself but do have some negative points.

It was a sunny day and saturday so quite busy, lot's of kids around. But this didn't put off most of the animals, most of whom bathed during the day so were viewable.

The Wolfs were active all day, watching them get fed was interesting to watch. Especially when one lifted up a whole cow legs and walked off with it without issue.

Josie the Lioness was roaring quite a lot at Tazmin the Siberian Tiger in the next enclosure. Watching her get fed was entertaining to watch. She had a donkeys head chained up a tree. She first tried pulling it down by her forepaws and finally by laying on her back and swinging back and forth briefly.

The Tigers rested most of the day, but were active later in the afternoon. Getting to be less than a metre away from a near shoulder high Siberian Tiger was a great experience.

Sovereign the Jaguar was quite active as well, walking about his enclosure and leaping up onto the platforms.

The Cheetah Sita spent most of the day lounging atop her mound.

The Bears were great to see, though fudge is very old and she could only slowly walk about her enclosure.

The Raccoon dogs were nice to see and one of them is used to human contact. They plan to let her meet people once she's settled in.

Several other animals, all were active and seemed happy.

The open front enclosures were great, gave unobstructed views to the animals and for photos,.

Now my negative points...

The whole place felt... Tired. Many of the railings were old, rotten and grimey. Many of the enclosures looked tired as well, apart from the Meerkats and vervet monkeys.

The toilets were awful! Old, not cleaned during the day, cubicle door didn't lock, hand wash broken off wall, bin full, the floor was very dirty and slippery.

Paths weren't that great either.

Personally I liked the animals, but the general state of the place was not pleasant. Exmoor Zoo, is a lot quieter and probably takes in less money yet, it's in far better state and feels likes it's being improved continously. Dartmoor to me felt like it was not. They say they want to spend millions for building enclosures for Giraffes, Orangutans and Elephants, I think they should spend it on tidying the place up first.

Loads of volunteers around, so why they could do mainteniance jobs, or even clean the facilities is beyond me.

Also most of the animals are quite old, the Bears, Tigers, Lioness and Jaguar particulary when they pass the Zoo is going to loose a large peart of it's collection.

Would I go back? Yes, but for the animals and to see if they improve the Zoo before building more enclosures.

I visited Dartmoor last June, due to being captivated by the story via the film -We Bought A Zoo.
Travelled from Carlisle; so quite a long way haha.

We enjoyed our day however i completely agree with you about the place seeming tired and although the animals appear happy and well cared for, i definitely think they should focus on sprucing the place up a bit rather than adding new animals.

They had just received a new racoon dog when we were there so wonder if this is the same one

One thing that stood out for us was how dirty the water - particularly in the tiger enclosure - was, we weren't aware it was a little pond until the moss etc on the top starting swaying in the breeze.

I would visit again but like you would like to see some maintenance jobs - even the simple ones to tidy up - being done. There was a lot of digging and moving around going on when we visited so i wonder what they have been doing if things are still not fixed etc.

I wonder what all the construction and work was for that was going on back when i visited last June then. They seemed to be repairing and tidying up a lot with plans to fix up some of the enclosures which i viewed as a must!

Be interesting to see what does happen.

I didn't visit last year, but there is an empty shed type building that has had a sign saying it is to be a reptile house since my first visit around 2006. They had knocked down some of the awful cages that were there on my first visit, but can't recall any new enclosures being built. (I'm sure the monkey enclosure was there on my first visit.)

They seemed to be doing a lot of work on enclosures near where the racoon dogs were, and appeared to be fixing the paths.
To be honest i think the whole place would look a lot happier if the grass was trimmed and kept a bit neater and just a general clean up.

Did you see the zebras, because I've heard nothing about them since their arrival over a year ago.

I was going to ask the same question, three zebra arrived at the park in February but I can't find anything on them since then.

do they still let u throw nuts into the bear enclosure? seemed like a very 70/80's thing to be doing

I have tweeted them simply asking if the zoo ever got any zebras as i hadn't seen them on my visit so i'll let you know if i get a response. They are usually pretty good at replying on there :)

My response was "we plan to have zebra by summer this year." ... which confuses me a little as they received three zebra earlier this year?

Sounds to me like they deliberately ignored the other part of your question- draw your own conclusions as to why.

@Drago

I take the point about toilets etc,but when I worked for a Northeastern parks department as boss I made it my job to clean the toilets each morning,I then knew they had been done correctly before the park was busy. If any one had a problem with them after that it was dealt with ASP. Did you mention the condition of the loos to one of the volunteers? Things need to be pointed out as people don't always see what is in front of them, they become blind to the things a fresh pair of eyes can see.

The toilets out in the grounds near the aviaries are old and dilapidated and probably beyond help. Those in the restaurant building are more salubrious. When I visited last June, I found the volunteers to be very well meaning but mainly reading from scripts, so possibly not geared up to dealing with problems. Things might have changed since then, of course.

There were no zebras on show at the time. In fact, there seemed to be fewer animals around than on my previous visit 2 years before that when I felt optimistic about the place (unlike last year :().

3 Zebras definitely arrived at the park last year called zebedee, zak and spot. There are pictures on the dzp facebook page.
