The plans for the new aviary with Pinguins and Flamingo's. It will be open for visitors. They start to build this in 2009 on the old "Duck breedingfarm"... :)

And is it sure that the humboldts of ZOO Antwerp are going to move to Planckendael?

I wonder what the ZOO of Antwerp is going to do with the space of the humboldts accomodation.

Planckendael and Apenheul are going to arrange an exchange of bonobos next week on Wednesday, 24th.

The two female bonobos "Lomela" (*19.05.1992 in Frankfurt, "Bono" x "Salonga") and "Jasiri" (*06.11.2002 in Apenheul, "Mwindu" x "Lomela") will travel to Planckendael to breed with "Kidogo II". In return "Hortense" (*~1982 WILD) and her three sons "Redy" (*24.11.1990 in Planckendael, "Desmond" x "Hortense"), "Zamba" (*16.04.1998 in Planckendael, "Kidogo II" x "Hortense") and "Hongo" (*25.02.2006 in Plackendael, "Vifiyo" x "Hortense") will go to Apenheul to revitalise the breeding, that stagnated after the death of "Mwindu" in 2007.

In my mind this exchange is a bad decision.

Why that BjoerN?

For Planckendael it is bad news, but for Apenheul good news. The male's can"t be everywhere at the same time, so this is needed. It is only a question of the 30years old Hortonse will adapt in the new group...

The two elder males shall have problems too, they are high in the ranking now, in Apenheul not...

But there will be more shifting in Bonobogroups they announced... Across the world...

@Litoria Caerulea and Gorilla Gust

At the first sight it seems to be a good deal for both zoos. Planckendael gets 2 young females substitutional to one old female and Apeldoorn receives two young fertile males to revitalise the breeding and an old females, that is experienced in breeding.

But let consider it genetically. "Lomela" and "Jasiri", daughter of a dead founder, are going to breed with "Kidogo II" in the future. "Kidogo II" is a son of "Masikini", the most potent bonobo male ever. He became father of 17 bonobos in Stuttgart and his male line is already over represented in the European population.
"Zamba", 10 year old son of "Hortense" is a son of "Kidogo II", "Hongo" is a grandson of him. Only "Redy" does not have any relationship to "Kidogo II".

The offspring of "Lomela" and "Jasiri" in Planckendael and "Jill", "Kumbuka", "Zuani" and "Liboso" in Apeldoorn is going to get problems to breed without inbreeding in the future, because "Kidogos" brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces and sons are living all over Europe in the Zoos of Stuttgart, Berlin, Leipzig, Planckendael, Frankfurt, Wuppertal, Apeldoorn and Twycross....

Thats the dilemma I would like to demonstrate.

They will be moving a lot of Bonobo's, according to the dutch press release that Apenheul did. Not only in Apenheul, but over the whole world. So that there will be only a minimal inbreed, and everything will be genetically ok (if possible)...

Perhaps the Planckendael situation is only for a few years/months?
I hope it :eek:!

@Upali
All adult males except for Kidogo II moved to Apeldoorn....

@Gorilla Gust
An exchange between the North American and European bonobo population would be desirable. The last transfer (0,2 "Unga" and "Kosana" from Planckendael to Columbus Zoo, Ohio) took place in 2001 and was a show of financial strength, clouded by the terroristic attacks.
The US bonobo population is in flux at the moment, several tranfers between the North American Zoo happened and will happen in the next months.

If it is possible, could you post the article from the dutch press that contains this statements please??

Who does the planckendael group contain now. Any information on the animals in the group? I thought it was quiet a good breeding group.

Slightly of topic but do you know what other bonobo transfers are planned?

I have no infomation about bonobo transfer plans of the EEP. The SSP is planing some transfers between US Zoos (Columbus-Milwaukee, Milwaukee-Cincinnati) at the moment.

The Planckendael group contains of:

1,0 Kidogo II (*28.02.1983 in Stuttgart, Masikini x Catherine)
1,0 Habari (*29.01.2006 in Planckendael, Kidogo x Djanoa)
0,1 Lomela (*19.05.1992 in Frankfurt, Bono x Salonga)
0,1 Hermien (*~1978 WILD)
0,1 Djanoa (*27.03.1995 in Berlin, Simon x Yala)
0,1 Huenda (*06.07.2006 in Planckendael, Redy x Hermien)
0,1 Jasiri (*06.11.2002 in Apeldoorn, Mwindu x Lomela)

Thanks for that BjoernN.

Milwaukee and Columbus are always transfering bonobos about the place! Milwaukee has a huge group now, time to send some over here!

Planckendaels seems like a healthy group now apart from another unrepresented male.

Actually don't they have another male, Vifijo?

Lomela and Jasiri are doing good in Planckendael, the mother has a small wound on here hand (maybe bitten?), but se has no harm of it. They are not "very thigth" with the other bonobo's, but there is no aggresion at the moment. Alphafemale Hermien doesn"t even care about them now... But overall? It goes great. After only 1 week they were in the group!

The former 4 from planckendael, now in Apenheul are doing great. Hortonse is now "big" there, thanks to here sons. And she haves a girlfriend that doesn"t leave here. The smallest Hongo, that is now a real playfull bully. Zamba does ok, and Redy is the only one with some small adaption problems... But overall? It goes great. After only 1 week they were in the group!
