Emus in walk-thru exhibits

If you are based in Carlisle and want to try a few other places on your doorstep, there is a small rescue centre just outside Penrith called Wetheriggs Zoo, and further north you are about an hour's drive from Galloway Wildlife Park just outside Kirkcudbright. You'll also be pretty close from Lake District Wildlife Park (formerly Trotters) which is just north of Bassenthwaite Lake :)

Thanks for those recommendations! Visited Lake District Wildlife Park last summer and plan on visiting again this summer :)
I will add Wetheriggs and Galloway Wildlife Park onto our list of places to visit.
Although, as giraffes are my main interest they're usually what we plan our trips around which is why we do return to South Lakes a lot ;)

My main passion is small carnivores, which is why I enjoyed Galloway so much - they have, among other species, Amur and Indochinese Leopard Cats, Corsac Foxes, Maned Wolves, Bat-eared Foxes and Servals :p

and there was a couple of issues with what i believe to be an East African Crowned Crane (although i may not have its name correct) and there were three troublesome individuals. One in particular took a particular liking to me much to my dismay and they were not afraid of pecking out at my boyfriend who stood between it and me.

When I was in Uganda recently a Crowned Crane showed one of my travelling companions a lot of interest in what appeared to be an aggressive way. I put myself between her and the bird and stared it down, it quickly lost interest and left.

Emus, on the other hand, are as thick as the proverbial brick. If this bird had been an emu and not a crane I probably would have had to push it away repeatedly.

:p

Yeah as i am wary of birds anyway i wasn't amused, as it was really pursuing me! My boyfriend tried the same thing - staring it down etc, but it wasn't backing off until I had left the area and it couldn't see me anymore! Guess i must just attract birds haha!!

I haven't had any issues with emus luckily as i majorly avoid them, they're as tall as me (i'm a short arse) and i don't fancy my chances against them!

Obviously the worst place to have a walk-through emu exhibit is somewhere where people are encouraged to eat. This is just asking for trouble.

The Australian Reptile Park has a main picnic area, with BBQs, tables, big trees and some small exhibits dotted about a large lawn. This is also the free-range animal area, and contains various macropods and three juvenile emus. These birds were very keen to get food, and came right up to the tables and BBQs, and tried to snatch food out of people's hands. And even chased some people (including small kids) who ran away from them.
