I think in Okanda's case, if they hadn't removed him he would have died as he was pretty much on his last legs when they did. It was probably better he went to Stuttgart as he at least had some Gorilla companionship there though both of them will probably grow up humanised to an extent anyway, its unaviodable if removed from the mother. There was intitially talk of reintroducing him to Ozala at Twycross but they failed to achieve that and given the fact they still didn't have a settled group at the time, its probably asking a lot for them to have succeeded with that.

Can someone please help? I'm paying my second ever visit to Twycross soon. I was wondering if they still have that system where you have to get a ticket to go in the Tropical/Nocturnal house.?
They've got rid of that system, it's self guided now. I last visited in August, and the Tropical House was feeling a bit run down, and was more or less empty from what I remember.
Tropical House is now closed indefinitely; from what I have heard, don't expect it to re-open.

As soon as Twycross have the money to do it within the legal requirements that will be required for the demolition of the building!

It would appear zebra are going into the giraffe enclosure. The bonobo house is closed not due to work on tortoise enclosure as we were previously told but due to storm damage to the roof. No sign of any repair work.
The Bonobo House was closed when I last visited on 5th January. Anybody know whether it's been closed since then and/or how long it's been closed? I'm not passing any judgement (it's not like the weather's been conducive to repairs), I'm just curious.

Made a visit last weekend. My first visit since 2010. This zoo has rapidly go down hill since then, and it wasn't that far above sea level back then. The enclosure where the Sloth is kept, is one of the worst enclosures for any animal i have ever seen anywhere. The collection is a lot poorer than what it was 4 years ago. But my major gripe is the paths. They need sorting before anything else. Your customers do not expect to have to wade through mud (I do because i visit a few zoo's). Joe public will not return if their white dappers, fake Uggs, or even high heels are full of mud. You need those types, more than my good self. So sort the paths out before anything else.
I have visited today, got some pictures and some updates from around the zoo. First thing first i am so glad i have a pass and didn't pay to get in or i would not be happy.
- The biggest thing for me was the tropical house has been knocked down
- The elephant paddock is being expanded looks like the bit across the bridge they have
- They have three big greenhouse things, that look like sheets of bubble paper have been put up where next to the train (view pictures).
- The bonobo house is still closed and looking though the door looks like a building site.
- The car park was more of a mud park same for the paths
- The big aviary on the entrance is still ripped (worse than before)
- The long house side near main road has just been left now after the netting fallen down.
- The old griffe house (that had the camels in, no idea where they have gone), is being redone, the paddock now extends all the way around the big grass section in the centre of the zoo).
- The prairie dogs now have a lot more soil (digging stuff).
- The old prairie dog pen is now a herb garden.
- Says about new kangaroos but only one in the paddock area, next to that is two emu.
- The old tapir house where you drive in has been re-done, you have a tapir (1) and capybara (2) in there now, looked like two capybara with a young one could not get a good look.
- Near the pelicans is a exhibit with a sloth, no words to explain that.
- Play area inside entrance is massive.
Just a few quick points to update on, any questions will get pictures up later.

The Tropical House became unsafe and had to be demolished.
The car park and the pathways are a disgrace and something need to be done about them.
The zoo was advised that the netting on the aviary in Himalaya was unsuitable.
The male camel is dead and the female has lef the collection.
The sloth is the one from the Tropical house.
